Karibu Mara River Camp sits roughly 300 metres from the Mara River in the northern Serengeti, positioned for direct access to one of the migration’s most dramatic chapters. The camp is one of five properties operated by Karibu Camps & Lodges, a locally owned Tanzanian collection spanning the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire.
Location and Landscape
The Mara River draws the migration’s herds into crossing attempts between July and October each year, with crocodile and waiting predators adding genuine tension to the spectacle. Outside this window, the river continues to draw elephant, eland and buffalo, while lion, leopard and cheetah maintain territories across the surrounding grassland throughout the year.
Accommodation
The camp offers fifteen luxury suites in twin and double configurations, built on stone platforms and decorated in wooden tones with black-and-white photography on the walls. Four-poster beds sit beneath mosquito netting, and each suite’s terrace looks out over the surrounding acacia woodland and meadow.
Safari Experience
Game drives focus on the Mara River and surrounding plains, with guides positioning vehicles for crossing attempts during the dry season and resident game viewing throughout the rest of the year. Meals are prepared by an experienced chef and served in the camp’s dining tent.
When to Visit
July through October brings the river crossings within easy reach of camp, the most sought-after season for witnessing the migration here. The green season from November through June offers a quieter alternative, with resident wildlife — large herds of elephant and buffalo, healthy predator populations — sustaining strong game viewing away from the peak-season crowds.
