Lake Masek, Ndutu Area — Southern Serengeti Ecosystem
This tented camp sits directly on the shore of Lake Masek, within the Ndutu area that straddles the southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The lake itself draws a steady stream of wildlife throughout the year. As a result, guests can watch much of it from their own private veranda.
Location and Landscape
Ndutu’s short-grass plains form one of the primary calving grounds for the Great Migration. Herds typically arrive from December, with the main calving season running into April. Beyond the migration, however, Lake Masek’s water draws elephant and hippo close to camp. The surrounding plains, in addition, support strong Big Five viewing throughout the year.
Accommodation
The camp’s 30 tents are built on raised wooden platforms, each spacious and finished with a private veranda overlooking the lake. The operation holds to genuine eco-principles. Biodegradable products run throughout, electricity comes from solar generation, and water collected during the rainy season serves the rest of the year. A central guest area includes a large lake-view veranda, a lounge, indoor and outdoor dining rooms, and a swimming pool. A campfire, finally, is lit each evening for sundowners.
Safari Experience
Game drives explore the Ndutu plains and surrounding Ngorongoro Conservation Area. These prove particularly rewarding during the December to April calving season, when predator activity intensifies around the newborn herds. The lake itself adds a passive game-viewing element rarely available directly from camp. Many guests report sightings, including occasional lion visits through camp itself, without ever leaving their tent.
When to Visit
December through April brings the wildebeest calving season directly to the surrounding plains, the camp’s strongest wildlife window. Outside this period, however, the lake’s resident wildlife and the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area continue to offer strong Big Five viewing.
Combining Lake Masek Tented Camp with Other Tanzania Destinations
Lake Masek’s position in the Ndutu area connects efficiently to both Ngorongoro Crater and the wider Serengeti. As a result, it serves as a practical base for travellers building a calving-season itinerary around the southern plains. Tarangire, similarly, extends naturally into a wider northern Tanzania circuit.
