Ndutu Safari Lodge is one of the longest-established properties in the Ndutu area, set beneath a canopy of giant acacia trees on the edge of the southern Serengeti plains, overlooking the seasonal Lake Ndutu. The lodge sits on the boundary between the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, at the head of Olduvai Gorge, with the Ngorongoro highlands visible in the distance.
Location and Landscape
Ndutu’s position places it at the heart of the wildebeest migration’s calving grounds, with the surrounding short-grass plains drawing the herds from December through to as late as May in some years. Giraffe, buffalo, gazelle, impala, elephant and lion regularly pass directly through the lodge grounds, and resident genets are a nightly fixture in the dining room, running along the rafters above guests.
Accommodation
The lodge comprises 34 stone-and-thatch cottages, built from local materials with thick, naturally cooling walls. Room configurations range from doubles and twins to triples and a family cottage, each with an en-suite bathroom featuring a hot shower and flush toilet, and a private veranda facing the lake. Interiors are simply furnished with polished stone or concrete floors, mosquito netting and African-print textiles rather than elaborate luxury detailing — the lodge’s appeal rests on its location and longevity rather than five-star finishes.
Safari Experience
Game drives explore the surrounding plains, swamps, woodland and soda lake habitats, with the calving season’s concentrated predator activity the clear highlight between December and March. The open-sided bar and lounge area looks out over the bush, and meals — sourced in part from the historic Gibb’s Farm — are taken communally, often continuing late into the evening around the fire.
When to Visit
December through May brings the migration’s calving season directly to the surrounding plains, the lodge’s defining wildlife window and the period when it is most heavily booked. Outside this window, the Serengeti’s resident wildlife and the lodge’s location near Olduvai Gorge continue to offer worthwhile game viewing and cultural interest.
Practical Information
The lodge is reached via the Ndutu airstrip, with transfers included in most rate packages. It is also accessible by road from Arusha, Lake Manyara or Ngorongoro for travellers on a self-driven or ground-guided itinerary.
