Do You Need Malaria Pills for Kenya?

A safari in Kenya is one of life’s most extraordinary adventures — but before you go, it’s essential to prepare for health and safety. One of the most common questions we hear is: “Do I need malaria pills for Kenya?” The answer is yes, malaria prevention is strongly recommended for all travelers, including visitors from the US, GCC, and India.

1. Malaria Risk in Kenya

  • Malaria is present in most safari destinations: Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo, Samburu, and coastal regions like Mombasa.

  • The risk is highest in rural and lowland areas.

  • Nairobi and high-altitude regions (above 2,500m) have minimal to no risk.

2. Recommended Malaria Pills

Doctors may prescribe one of the following for travelers:

  • Atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone) – daily dose, well-tolerated.

  • Doxycycline – daily dose, also prevents other infections.

  • Mefloquine (Lariam) – weekly dose, but not suitable for everyone.

Your choice depends on your medical history, duration of stay, and personal preference.

3. When to Start & Stop

  • Start: 1–2 days before entering Kenya (for most medications).

  • Continue: Daily during your trip.

  • Finish: 7 days (Malarone/Doxycycline) or up to 4 weeks (Mefloquine) after leaving Kenya.

4. Extra Preventive Measures

Even with pills, prevention is key:

  • Sleep under treated mosquito nets (most luxury lodges provide these).

  • Apply mosquito repellent with DEET or picaridin.

  • Wear long sleeves and trousers in the evenings.

5. Advice for US, GCC & Indian Travelers

  • US travelers: Prescriptions are required, so consult your doctor or a travel clinic.

  • GCC travelers: Pharmacies in UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar stock common preventives but consult a physician first.

  • Indian travelers: Malaria pills are available locally, but dosage must be prescribed by a doctor.
