A Celebration Rooted in Faith & Tradition
The Night Before Meskel – Building the Demera
On September 26th, families gather to construct the demera, a towering structure made of twigs and branches, resembling the legendary fiery tree that guided St. Helena to the True Cross. A flower-adorned cross crowns the structure, marking the beginning of the spiritual preparations.
Meskel Morning – Liturgical Ceremonies & Public Gatherings
On Meskel morning, communities attend special church services, while Meskel Square in Addis Ababa becomes the focal point of the festivities. Clergy dressed in colorful robes, carry gold-adorned umbrellas, leading a magnificent procession that fills the city with sacred chants and blessings.
Sacrificial Rituals & Community Celebrations
As the ceremonial mass concludes, households perform a traditional sacrifice, believed to bring blessings and ward off evil. Families then gather around their demeras, singing folk songs and hymns, while dancers move rhythmically around the bonfires, a tradition passed down for generations.
The Burning of the Demera – A Fiery Spectacle
As night falls, the demeras are set ablaze, illuminating the sky with towering flames and billowing smoke. The burning demera symoolizes purification and renewal, and as the embers die down, families mark themselves with the cross using the sacred ashes, affirming their devotion to God.
