Campi Ya Kanzi
Campi Ya Kanzi sits within the protected wilderness of the Chyulu Hills between Amboseli National Park and Tsavo West National Park.
The lodge lies inside the vast Kuku Group Ranch, a Maasai-owned conservation landscape that forms part of the greater Amboseli ecosystem. From the property the view stretches across open plains toward Mount Kilimanjaro, which dominates the southern skyline on clear mornings.
Unlike many safari lodges developed purely for tourism, Campi Ya Kanzi was established as a conservation partnership with the Maasai community. As a result, the experience here combines wildlife safaris with meaningful cultural and conservation engagement.
Landscape & Setting
Volcanic activity shaped the Chyulu Hills into a chain of rolling green mountains rising above wide savannah plains.
Across the surrounding landscape ancient lava flows, grasslands and acacia woodland create varied habitats for wildlife. Meanwhile, the open plains form a natural corridor linking Amboseli with the larger Tsavo ecosystem.
Because the area remains lightly visited, the wilderness feels remote and undisturbed. On clear days Kilimanjaro appears across the horizon, creating one of the most impressive landscapes in southern Kenya.
Accommodation
Accommodation at Campi Ya Kanzi consists of a small number of stone cottages and luxury tented suites positioned along the hillside.
Each unit offers:
- Private terraces overlooking the plains
- Panoramic views toward Kilimanjaro
- Ensuite bathrooms with large bathtubs
- Comfortable safari-style interiors
Because the lodge hosts only a limited number of guests, the atmosphere remains quiet and personal.
Safari Experience / Activities
The surrounding conservancy allows a wide variety of safari experiences.
Activities may include:
• Game drives across the Chyulu Hills landscape
• Guided walking safaris with Maasai guides
• Cultural visits to Maasai communities
• Wildlife photography beneath Kilimanjaro
• Scenic flights over the Chyulu Hills
In addition, the lodge focuses strongly on conservation and community partnerships with the Maasai people who protect the surrounding land.
Wildlife
Wildlife moves freely across the connected landscapes of the Chyulu Hills, Amboseli and Tsavo.
Sightings may include:
• Elephant
• Lion and cheetah
• Buffalo
• Zebra and giraffe
• Numerous plains antelope
Elephants regularly pass through the plains below the lodge, particularly during the cooler hours of the day.
When to Visit
Campi Ya Kanzi can be visited throughout the year.
June – October
Dry season conditions usually offer the best wildlife viewing.
January – March
Clear skies often reveal dramatic views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
April – May / November
Seasonal rains bring greener landscapes across the Chyulu Hills.
Because the surrounding wilderness remains extensive and lightly visited, wildlife viewing remains rewarding in most months.
Insider Tips
Clear views of Kilimanjaro most often appear shortly after sunrise before clouds gather around the summit.
Meanwhile, elephants frequently move across the plains linking the Chyulu Hills and Amboseli ecosystems.
Walking safaris offer an especially rewarding way to experience the landscape, allowing guides to interpret wildlife tracks, plants and traditional Maasai knowledge of the region.
Oloi Shorua Must-Do
Join a guided walking safari across the Chyulu Hills plains, where Maasai guides interpret the landscape, wildlife tracks and traditional knowledge of the ecosystem.
Oloi Shorua Recommendation
We recommend spending three nights at Campi Ya Kanzi in order to experience both the wildlife safaris and the cultural activities with the Maasai community. For travellers exploring the Chyulu Hills in depth, the lodge combines particularly well with Ol Donyo Lodge, which offers a different perspective on the same wilderness landscape.
