Elsa’s Kopje
Elsa’s Kopje is located within Meru National Park, one of Kenya’s most remote and historically significant safari destinations.
The lodge is built into Mughwango Hill, a rocky kopje rising above the surrounding plains. From this elevated position the views stretch across the rivers, forests, and savannah landscapes that define Meru.
The property takes its name from Elsa the Lioness, whose story was made famous by the book and film Born Free. George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa in this region before returning her to the wild, making Meru an important part of Africa’s conservation history.

Landscape & Setting
Meru National Park offers a strikingly different safari landscape compared with many other parks in Kenya.
The terrain combines open plains, winding rivers, doum palm groves and forested areas that support a wide range of wildlife. In addition, several permanent rivers flow through the park, creating fertile corridors where animals gather throughout the year.
Elsa’s Kopje sits high above these landscapes, allowing panoramic views across the wilderness while still remaining close to the park’s wildlife areas.

Accommodation
Elsa’s Kopje is designed as an intimate safari lodge with cottages built into the rocky hillside.
Accommodation includes:
- Spacious cottages with open bedrooms
- Private terraces overlooking the park
- Ensuite bathrooms with large bathtubs
- Stone and thatch architecture integrated into the kopje
Each cottage is individually designed, and the elevated setting provides exceptional views across Meru’s plains and river systems.

Safari Experience / Activities
Meru National Park offers a quieter safari experience compared with Kenya’s more visited reserves.
Activities from Elsa’s Kopje include:
• Game drives across Meru National Park
• Exploring the park’s river systems and palm forests
• Guided nature walks
• Visiting sites associated with the Born Free story
• Sundowners overlooking the park
Because visitor numbers remain relatively low, wildlife sightings often occur without other vehicles nearby.

Wildlife
Meru National Park supports a diverse range of wildlife across its varied habitats.
Wildlife sightings commonly include:
• Elephant and buffalo
• Lion and leopard
• Grevy’s zebra
• Reticulated giraffe
• Numerous plains antelope
The park’s river systems also support strong birdlife and attract wildlife throughout the year.

When to Visit
Elsa’s Kopje can be visited throughout the year.
June – October
The dry season offers excellent wildlife viewing as animals concentrate near rivers and water sources.
December – March
Clear skies and warm days create ideal safari conditions.
April – May / November
Rainfall during these months brings greener landscapes and fewer visitors.
Insider Tips
Early morning drives along Meru’s river systems often produce the best wildlife sightings.
Because the lodge sits high on the kopje, sunset views across the plains are particularly memorable.
In addition, visiting the nearby Born Free sites offers insight into one of Africa’s most famous conservation stories.

Oloi Shorua Must-Do
Visit the Born Free sites within Meru National Park, where Elsa the Lioness was raised and later returned to the wild.
The story remains one of the most influential conservation narratives in Africa.
Oloi Shorua Recommendation
We recommend taking an early morning safari along the park’s river systems, where elephants, giraffe and other wildlife often gather in the cooler hours of the day.
