Giraffe-Manor

Giraffe Manor

Set within the leafy suburb of Karen on the southern edge of Nairobi, Giraffe Manor is one of Kenya’s most distinctive and celebrated boutique properties. The historic manor house sits within 12 acres of private gardens and indigenous forest and forms part of the larger Giraffe Centre sanctuary.

Originally built in the 1930s and inspired by the architecture of Scottish hunting lodges, the manor evokes the atmosphere of East Africa’s early safari era. Today it is widely recognised for the unique experience that unfolds each morning and evening when resident Rothschild’s giraffes wander across the lawns and gently stretch their necks through the manor’s windows.

Because of its intimate scale and extraordinary setting, Giraffe Manor offers one of the most memorable introductions to Kenya for travellers beginning or concluding a safari.

Landscape & Setting

Although located within Nairobi, the manor’s setting feels surprisingly tranquil. Mature gardens, acacia trees, and small forested areas surround the house, creating an atmosphere that feels far removed from the bustle of the city.

The surrounding sanctuary protects a population of endangered Rothschild’s giraffes, and the animals move freely across the property. As a result, guests frequently encounter giraffes wandering across the lawns or appearing outside the manor’s dining room windows.

At sunrise, the combination of soft morning light, grazing giraffes, and the elegant manor house creates one of the most iconic scenes in East African travel.

Accommodation

Giraffe Manor offers a limited number of individually designed rooms and suites within the historic manor and the adjoining Garden Manor building.

Each room is decorated in a classic safari style with antique furnishings, warm wood tones, and large windows overlooking the gardens. Many rooms feature balconies or large windows from which giraffes are occasionally seen wandering nearby.

Accommodation typically includes:

• Elegant manor rooms with ensuite bathrooms
• Spacious suites within the Garden Manor wing
• Private balconies or garden views in several rooms
• Classic safari-inspired interiors

Because the property accommodates only a small number of guests, the atmosphere remains intimate and highly personalised.

Experiences

The signature experience at Giraffe Manor occurs during breakfast and afternoon tea, when the resident giraffes often approach the manor’s windows.

Guests may feed the giraffes specially prepared pellets while enjoying breakfast in the sunlit dining room. The animals gently lean through the windows, creating a moment that has become one of the most photographed experiences in Africa.

Additional activities include:

• Guided visits to the nearby Giraffe Centre
• Afternoon tea with giraffe visits
• Walks through the sanctuary grounds
• Visits to nearby conservation organisations
• Excursions to Nairobi National Park

These experiences allow travellers to engage closely with Kenya’s conservation efforts before departing for the wilderness areas of the country.

Wildlife

Although Giraffe Manor is located within the city, the sanctuary surrounding the property supports a variety of wildlife.

Wildlife encounters may include:

• Rothschild’s giraffes
• Warthogs
• Bushbuck
• Numerous bird species

The protected giraffe population forms the heart of the experience and reflects the conservation work carried out by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife.

When to Visit

Giraffe Manor can be visited throughout the year. Because Nairobi enjoys a mild climate due to its elevation, conditions remain comfortable in most seasons.

June – October
Cooler dry season with clear skies.

January – March
Warm weather and bright mornings.

April – May / November
Seasonal rains that bring greener gardens and quieter visitor numbers.

Regardless of the season, the giraffe encounters remain the highlight of a stay.

Insider Tips

• Rooms overlooking the front lawn often provide the best opportunities for giraffe encounters.
• The manor is extremely popular and typically books many months in advance.
• Many travellers combine a stay here with nearby The Emakoko or continue onward directly to safari destinations such as the Masai Mara or Laikipia.

Oloi Shorua Must-Do

Enjoy breakfast in the manor’s dining room while the resident giraffes gently lean through the windows to greet guests. Few wildlife encounters in Africa feel as intimate or memorable.

Oloi Shorua Recommendation

We recommend beginning a Kenyan safari with a night at Giraffe Manor before flying onward to the Masai Mara or Laikipia conservancies. This sequence offers a gentle introduction to Kenya’s wildlife and conservation story before continuing deeper into the safari landscapes.
