Sarara

Sarara Camp

Located in the heart of Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy within the dramatic Matthews Range of northern Kenya, Sarara Camp offers one of the most distinctive safari experiences in East Africa.

Set at the foot of forested mountains overlooking a natural waterhole, the camp blends beautifully into its surroundings while providing exceptional comfort and guiding. Elephant herds regularly gather below the camp, creating remarkable wildlife viewing directly from the lodge.

Sarara operates in close partnership with the Samburu community, and the conservancy itself is one of Kenya’s most successful examples of community-led conservation. The result is a safari experience that combines wildlife, culture, and wilderness in a way that feels deeply authentic.

Sarara Camp

The Experience

Sarara Camp is designed to immerse guests in the landscapes and traditions of northern Kenya.

The camp features spacious open-fronted tents built from natural materials, each positioned to overlook the valley and waterhole below. The design reflects Samburu craftsmanship and blends seamlessly into the surrounding wilderness.

Because Namunyak Conservancy receives relatively few visitors, the safari experience here feels remote and unhurried, with vast landscapes largely to yourself.

Wildlife and Conservation

The Matthews Range supports a surprisingly rich wildlife population.

Animals commonly encountered include:

• Elephant herds moving through the valleys
• Leopard in the forested hills
• Lion across the surrounding plains
• Reticulated giraffe
• Greater kudu and other northern Kenya species

The conservancy is also home to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, one of Africa’s most inspiring community-led conservation initiatives.

Safari Activities

Sarara offers a range of safari experiences that go beyond traditional game drives.

These may include:

• Visit the Singing Wells, where Samburu warriors draw water while chanting traditional songs
• Guided game drives in Namunyak Conservancy
• Camel safaris across the Matthews Range
• Visits to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary
• Walking safaris with Samburu guides

These experiences allow travellers to connect more deeply with the land and its people.

Oloi Shorua Must-Do

Visit the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary at feeding time.

Watching Samburu keepers care for orphaned elephant calves is one of the most moving wildlife experiences in Kenya and offers a rare insight into community-driven conservation.

Take the overnight camel safari across Namunyak Conservancy.

Few safari experiences in Africa feel as timeless as travelling through the Matthews Range by camel with Samburu guides. The journey moves slowly through remote valleys and forests before reaching a fly-camp set beneath the stars. It is one of the most memorable ways to experience the wilderness and culture of northern Kenya.

Oloi Shorua Recommendation

Sarara Camp is best experienced over three nights so you can combine traditional game drives with the camel safari and a visit to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. The combination of wildlife, Samburu culture, and the dramatic landscapes of the Matthews Range creates one of Kenya’s most distinctive safari experiences.
