Arrival & First Impressions of Marakele Safari
There’s a special magic in the first moments of a safari. For me, the arrival at Marakele Safari in Limpopo Province, South Africa, was unforgettable. After a long-haul journey from Mumbai to Johannesburg, I set off on a 4-hour drive north toward the wild heart of Marakele National Park.
The landscapes shifted from busy highways to rolling farmlands and quiet rural stretches. Each kilometer brought me closer to the wilderness that awaited. By the time I passed the small Hoopsdal Police Station, I knew I was entering a very different world.

Entering the Wilderness
At the park gate, I was greeted by Mac, the friendly security guard, who handed me the indemnity form—an official reminder that once inside, the wildlife has the right of way. From there, the last seven kilometers to the lodge were on rough terrain, a true test for my Mercedes C-Class.
Along the track, I noticed toppled trees and fresh elephant dung—nature’s way of saying, Welcome to Marakele.
Just minutes later, the welcome became real. A lone female elephant stood calmly by the roadside, chewing leaves and completely unbothered by my presence. It was the perfect beginning to my journey—wild, raw, and deeply moving.
A Warm Lodge Welcome
When I finally arrived at Marataba Safari Lodge, the contrast was striking. Cold towels, refreshing drinks, and warm smiles greeted me at the entrance. Nestled at the foot of the Waterberg Mountains, the lodge seemed to merge seamlessly into the surrounding bush.
That first impression—wild elephants outside, serene luxury inside—captured the essence of the Marakele Safari experience.
