Amboseli & Chyulu Hills Safari Lodges
(Amboseli National Park, Kimana Sanctuary & the Chyulu Hills)
Kenya’s Amboseli ecosystem is one of the most iconic safari regions in Africa. The open plains of Amboseli National Park lie beneath the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. As a result, this creates one of the most recognisable wildlife landscapes on the continent.
Beyond the national park, the surrounding conservancies of Kimana and Kitirua extend the wilderness into quieter private areas. In these conservancies, wildlife moves freely across the greater Amboseli ecosystem. Further west, the volcanic landscapes of the Chyulu Hills form a dramatic chain of green hills and lava fields. These stretch between Amboseli and Tsavo.
Within this ecosystem travellers can experience classic elephant safaris in Amboseli National Park. In addition, exclusive wildlife viewing is available in the surrounding conservancies. Furthermore, remote wilderness landscapes await in the Chyulu Hills.

Landscape & Setting
The landscape of the Amboseli ecosystem is dominated by vast open plains, seasonal wetlands and the towering presence of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Amboseli National Park itself consists of dry lakebeds, grasslands and marshes fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro’s glaciers. These wetlands attract large numbers of animals and create some of the most dramatic wildlife photography opportunities in Africa.
Outside the park, private conservancies such as Kimana Sanctuary and Kitirua Conservancy offer quieter wildlife areas with sweeping views of Kilimanjaro. Meanwhile, the Chyulu Hills rise to the west as a chain of volcanic mountains covered in forest and rolling grasslands.
Together these landscapes form one of Kenya’s most distinctive safari environments.

Safari Experience / Activities
The Amboseli ecosystem offers a wide range of safari experiences.
Activities may include:

• Elephant viewing beneath Mount Kilimanjaro
• Wildlife safaris within private conservancies
• Guided nature walks and cultural visits
• Exploring the volcanic landscapes of the Chyulu Hills

Because several lodges operate in private conservancies, travellers often enjoy a broader range of safari activities than in national parks alone.

Wildlife
Amboseli is internationally known for its large elephant herds, many of which have been studied for decades by conservation researchers.
Wildlife encounters may include:
• Elephant
• Lion and cheetah
• Buffalo and zebra
• Giraffe and wildebeest
• Numerous antelope species
In addition, the wetlands of Amboseli support excellent birdlife. Meanwhile, the surrounding conservancies extend the wildlife corridors into the greater ecosystem.
When to Visit
The Amboseli ecosystem can be visited throughout the year.
June – October
The dry season provides excellent wildlife viewing as animals gather around the park’s wetlands.
January – March
Clear skies often produce the most dramatic views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
April – May / November
Rainfall during these months creates greener landscapes and quieter safari conditions.
Because of the open terrain, wildlife is generally easy to see throughout the year.
Insider Tips
• Early morning game drives often provide the clearest views of Mount Kilimanjaro before clouds gather around the summit.
• Amboseli’s wetlands attract elephants throughout the day, creating exceptional wildlife photography opportunities.
• Conservancy lodges around the park usually offer quieter wildlife viewing than the national park itself.
• The Chyulu Hills provide a completely different safari landscape compared with the open plains of Amboseli.
