Segera Retreat

Segera Retreat

Segera Conservancy, Laikipia Plateau — north of Mount Kenya

Segera Retreat sits within a 50,000-acre private conservancy on the Laikipia Plateau. Unlike most Kenyan safari lodges, it operates on a different axis entirely. Wildlife is central here — however, so are architecture, art and a conservation philosophy of genuine intellectual depth.

Jochen Zeitz — former CEO of PUMA and co-founder of the B Team — founded Segera around four principles. Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce form the 4Cs model. That framework consequently shapes how the conservancy operates and what guests encounter during a stay.

Location and Landscape

The Laikipia Plateau sits north of Mount Kenya and is one of East Africa’s most ecologically significant conservation landscapes. Open savannah, acacia woodland and riverine habitats support strong wildlife populations across the conservancy. Additionally, private management keeps visitor numbers very low. Consequently, game drives carry a quality of space that national parks cannot match.

The plateau elevation produces cool mornings and clear mountain views. At sunrise, elephant herds move across the open plains with Mount Kenya filling the southern horizon. For guests who value landscape as much as wildlife, Segera’s setting is among the finest in Kenya.

Accommodation and Design

Segera’s villas are architecturally distinct from anything else in the Kenya safari circuit. Contemporary materials and considered spatial design replace the canvas tent as the default form. Each villa has a private deck, indoor and outdoor bathrooms and views across the conservancy. Selected villas include private plunge pools.

Throughout the retreat, works from the Segera Art Collection appear in rooms, corridors and outdoor spaces. This collection gathers contemporary African art from across the continent and is one of the most substantial private collections in any safari setting in Africa. Moreover, for many guests the art changes how a stay here registers — adding a dimension that few lodges anywhere can offer.

For complete privacy, Segera House provides exclusive-use accommodation within the same conservancy. Dedicated staff, a private vehicle and a dedicated guide come with the arrangement. This option suits families and private groups who want the full Segera experience without sharing it with other guests.

Safari Experience

Game drives cover the full 50,000-acre conservancy. Because the land operates under private management, guides go off-road and set their own schedule. Night drives run after dark and consistently produce nocturnal species. Walking safaris move through terrain where elephant, lion and leopard are active. Additionally, rhino tracking on foot provides direct engagement with Segera’s conservation work.

The conservancy supports elephant, lion, leopard, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra and rhino — both black and white. Furthermore, Segera plays an active role in rhino protection across the wider Laikipia ecosystem. Cultural visits to neighbouring communities offer context for the conservation model that guides explain on every drive.

When to Visit

Segera’s resident wildlife means game viewing is strong throughout the year. However, the dry season between June and October produces the clearest conditions as wildlife concentrates around water sources. December through March delivers warm weather and consistent Mount Kenya views at dawn. April and May bring lush green landscapes and notably lower visitor numbers. Indeed, for travellers who value solitude, the green season offers exceptional quality at reduced rates.

Combining Segera with Other Kenya Destinations

Segera works naturally within a Laikipia circuit. Borana Lodge and Lewa Wilderness share the same plateau ecosystem. Together, these three properties give guests a thorough understanding of Laikipia’s character and range. Beyond Laikipia, the Masai Mara provides contrasting open grassland wildlife. Samburu adds the northern frontier ecosystem. Additionally, the Kenya coast closes a journey naturally at the Indian Ocean.
