Luxury South African Hotels and Lodges
Our South Africa Collection holds a genuinely unusual range within a single country: a world-class city in Cape Town, centuries-old wine estates in the Winelands, indigenous forest and coastline along the Garden Route, and Big Five safari across both the Eastern Cape and Greater Kruger. Further east, KwaZulu-Natal adds a further, distinct safari landscape at Phinda.
At Oloi Shorua, we recommend a curated South Africa Collection of properties across each of these regions, chosen for their setting, character and the experience each genuinely offers, rather than simply their address. Background on the country’s regions and seasons is also available from South African Tourism.
Why South Africa Rewards a Considered Itinerary
Few African countries allow a traveller to combine city, vineyard, coastline and safari within a single trip as naturally as South Africa does. Distances between regions are manageable by both road and short domestic flights, and the country’s broader infrastructure makes self-driving a genuine option for parts of the journey, unlike many of the destinations further north in Africa.
Key reasons South Africa rewards careful planning:
- A genuine range of experiences within one country, from city and wine to coastline and Big Five safari
- Strong infrastructure, including reliable domestic flights and well-maintained roads between regions
- Malaria-free safari options in the Eastern Cape, suiting families and travellers wanting to avoid antimalarial medication
- Distinct seasons across regions, allowing a trip to be timed around whale watching, wine harvest or dry-season game viewing
The South Africa Collection by Region
- Cape Town and Surrounds — Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront, the Atlantic seaboard and Hermanus
- Winelands — Franschhoek and Stellenbosch’s historic wine estates
- Garden Route — indigenous forest and coastline around Knysna and Plettenberg Bay
- Eastern Cape — malaria-free Big Five safari across the Shamwari collection, Founders Lodge and Gorah Elephant Camp
- Greater Kruger and Sabi Sand — South Africa’s most concentrated collection of luxury safari lodges
- East Coast — Phinda Private Game Reserve and its seven distinct habitats in KwaZulu-Natal
When to Visit South Africa
South Africa’s seasons vary meaningfully by region. Cape Town and the Winelands run warmest and driest from November through March, while the safari regions generally offer their clearest game viewing during the dry winter months from May through September. Hermanus and the Garden Route add a further seasonal layer, with whale watching strongest from June through November.
Planning Your South Africa Collection Itinerary
Most journeys combine two or three regions within a single trip, given the manageable distances between them. A common pairing runs Cape Town and the Winelands together, or a coastal Garden Route extension alongside either. Safari time, whether in the Eastern Cape, Greater Kruger or on the East Coast, generally sits at the start or end of a wider itinerary.
