Kicheche Mara Camp
Mara North Conservancy, Maasai Mara — Kicheche
Kicheche Mara Camp operates in the Mara North Conservancy on a deliberately small scale — six classic canvas tents. However, what defines Kicheche is the guiding. Experienced safari travellers and wildlife photographers seek this camp out specifically for guide quality. Few operations in the Mara carry the same reputation in this regard.
The Mara North Conservancy borders the Maasai Mara National Reserve and lies close to the Mara River. During migration season, this positioning places the camp near the river crossing areas. For guests who want to understand the ecosystem’s northern edge, the location matters considerably.

Location and Landscape
Mara North Conservancy covers open savannah, acacia woodland and seasonal river valleys. Private management keeps vehicle numbers very low. Consequently, wildlife encounters carry a quality of calm that the main reserve cannot consistently match. Lion, leopard, cheetah and elephant all move through in strong numbers. Furthermore, the conservancy sits directly on the Great Migration route between July and October.

Accommodation
Kicheche maintains a classic tented camp aesthetic. Canvas tents sit on simple platforms with private verandas and en-suite bathrooms. Interiors are understated and comfortable. Nothing competes with the landscape for visual attention. That restraint is deliberate — for Kicheche, the experience happens in the field, not in the room.

Safari Experience
Game drives access the Mara North Conservancy and the wider reserve. Because the conservancy operates privately, guides go off-road and track animals through the bush. Night drives run after dark. Walking safaris operate with experienced guides in appropriate areas. However, it is the game drive guiding that stands out.
Kicheche guides build deep knowledge of the terrain and individual animals over years. They often limit vehicles to two guests per car. This creates a precision and personal quality that larger camps cannot replicate. Consequently, the experience feels closer to a private guiding session than a standard group game drive.
When to Visit
Mara North produces strong wildlife viewing throughout the year. However, July through October brings the Great Migration. Wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River during this period. The camp’s northern position places it close to the crossing areas. December through March delivers dry conditions and high predator activity. Additionally, April and May bring green landscapes and notably lower visitor numbers.
Combining Kicheche Mara with Other Kenya Destinations
Kicheche Mara pairs naturally with other Mara conservancy camps for a deeper exploration of the ecosystem. Additionally, combining it with Laikipia gives the full Kenya highland circuit. Samburu to the north adds the frontier ecosystem and the Samburu Special Five. Furthermore, the Kenya coast provides a natural ocean close to any safari journey.
