Richard’s Camp

Mara North Conservancy, Maasai Mara — Richard Bonham Safaris

Richard’s Camp takes its name from Richard Bonham — one of Kenya’s most respected professional guides and conservationists, with decades of experience in the Mara ecosystem. Bonham also co-designed Angama Mara. However, Richard’s Camp represents an earlier and more traditional expression of his approach to the landscape — a classic tented camp in the Mara North Conservancy, run with the guiding philosophy and conservation values that his career has been built on.

Location and Landscape

Mara North Conservancy borders the Maasai Mara National Reserve on its northern edge and lies close to the Mara River. Private management keeps vehicle numbers low. Consequently, game drives carry a quality of space that the main reserve cannot consistently match. Off-road driving and night drives are permitted. Lion, leopard, cheetah and elephant are present in strong numbers. Additionally, the conservancy falls on Great Migration routes between July and October.

Accommodation

Canvas tents sit on platforms with private verandas facing the plains. Interiors use natural materials and classic safari furnishings. En-suite bathrooms have hot showers. The design is understated throughout — the attention is on the landscape and the guiding rather than the architecture. For travellers who find heavily designed safari camps at odds with the purpose of being in the bush, Richard’s Camp offers a deliberate alternative.

Safari Experience

Game drives access Mara North and the wider Maasai Mara National Reserve. Because the conservancy operates privately, guides go off-road and drive after dark. Walking safaris are available in appropriate areas. The guiding philosophy here reflects Bonham’s own approach — ecological depth, careful observation and time spent with individual animals rather than moving quickly between sightings. Consequently, stays of three nights or more tend to reward guests most fully.

When to Visit

Mara North delivers strong wildlife viewing throughout the year. However, July through October brings the Great Migration. Wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River during this period. The camp’s northern position places it close to the crossing areas. December through March provides dry conditions and excellent predator activity. Additionally, April and May bring green landscapes and lower visitor numbers.

Combining Richard’s Camp with Other Kenya Destinations

Richard’s Camp works naturally within a wider Kenya circuit. Laikipia to the north adds highland terrain and rhino. Samburu brings the frontier ecosystem. Furthermore, the Kenya coast closes a journey naturally at the Indian Ocean.
