One Nature Nyaruswiga

Nyaruswiga Hills, Central Serengeti — One Nature

One Nature Nyaruswiga sits within the Nyaruswiga Hills in the heart of central Serengeti, close to the Seronera Valley — the area most guides consider the park’s most reliable game-viewing ground, given its permanent water and dense resident predator population. The camp sits roughly a 25-minute drive from the Seronera airstrip, and its position on a slight rise gives unobstructed views over the surrounding plains, with wildlife visible from camp on many mornings without a vehicle involved at all.

A dozen tented suites, including a two-bedroom family option, sit spaced through woodland on the hillside, each built from natural materials and solar-powered as part of the camp’s broader sustainability approach. The design leans toward an elegant, almost domestic register rather than a traditional safari-tent aesthetic — four-poster beds, freestanding bathtubs, and private verandas positioned to catch the view rather than simply face it.

Location and Landscape

Central Serengeti’s defining advantage is the Seronera River system, which keeps this part of the park rich in wildlife throughout the year, independent of the migration’s movements. Lion prides hold fixed territories among the area’s granite kopjes, leopard frequent the riverine forest along the valley floor, and cheetah work the open grassland edges — making this one of the few parts of the Serengeti where strong sightings are close to guaranteed regardless of season.

The migration itself passes through this central corridor twice annually, in April to June as herds move toward the western corridor, and again in November and December on the return south. Guests staying here during those windows can encounter the herds without the longer drives required from camps further north or south. Outside those months, the resident game more than compensates — this remains one of the most consistently productive game-viewing areas in the park.

Accommodation

The camp’s tents are built on raised wooden platforms, each with a private veranda, an indoor lounge area, and an en-suite bathroom finished in teak with an outdoor shower. Interiors favour a quieter, more refined register than the campaign-style decor found at many Serengeti camps — fewer trunks and binoculars-as-decor, more in the way of considered furniture and natural materials.

The One-Bedroom Luxury Tent measures 92 square metres and sleeps up to three guests, with a wood-burning fire stove, a freestanding copper bathtub, and both indoor and outdoor showers. The Two-Bedroom Luxury Family Tent extends to 178 square metres across two bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom, sleeping up to six guests in total — a practical option for a multi-generational party without sacrificing privacy. All tents share access to the central lounge and bar, a dining tent, a heated split-level infinity pool with an adjoining jacuzzi, a small gym, and an astral observatory with a telescope, all positioned to look directly out over the plains.

Safari Experience

Game drives from Nyaruswiga work the surrounding Seronera area on a daily basis, with guides drawing on detailed, ongoing knowledge of resident pride territories and individual animals — a function of the camp’s fixed position rather than a roaming itinerary. Morning and afternoon drives are standard, with full-day drives and bush picnics available for guests wanting to range further into the central or southern plains.

Walking safaris and hot air balloon flights are both available, generally at additional cost, alongside cultural visits to nearby Maasai villages. An astral observatory with a telescope gives the camp a distinctive evening activity beyond the conventional sundowner — a deliberate addition given how dark the skies become this far from any town.

When to Visit

Central Serengeti offers strong wildlife viewing throughout the year, given its permanent water and resident predator populations — a genuine advantage over migration-dependent camps elsewhere in the park. April through June and November through December bring the migration directly through this corridor, adding seasonal density to an already strong baseline. The dry season from June to October delivers the clearest skies and easiest road conditions, while the shorter rains in November bring a greener, quieter landscape with noticeably fewer vehicles.

Practical Information

Access to Nyaruswiga is by light aircraft to the Seronera airstrip, followed by a road transfer to camp. Because the charter flight into the area has limited cargo space, baggage is restricted to 15kg per person, and only soft-sided duffel bags are accepted — hard-shell suitcases will not fit the aircraft’s hold.

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzanian visa on arrival, though some require pre-approval; this is worth confirming with the Tanzanian embassy ahead of travel. Visa fees are payable in cash at immigration — USD 50 per person, or USD 100 for American citizens — and it is advisable to carry the exact amount, as change is not always available.

Yellow fever vaccination is required for all travellers aged one year and above arriving from, or having transited for more than 12 hours through, a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. A valid vaccination certificate must be presented on arrival; travellers arriving directly from non-risk countries do not need it.

Combining One Nature Nyaruswiga with Other Tanzania Destinations

Nyaruswiga’s central position makes it a natural anchor for a wider Serengeti stay, easily combined with a camp further north for the July to October river crossings, or further south on the Ndutu plains for January to March calving season. Ngorongoro Crater sits within a manageable transfer for a one or two-night addition, and Tarangire works well as a closing or opening stop given its very different elephant-led landscape. For a coastal close to the journey, Zanzibar is under two hours away by light aircraft.
