Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp

Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp

Mobile camp, Serengeti National Park — Nomad Tanzania

Serengeti Safari Camp is one of Nomad Tanzania’s original mobile properties. It relocates several times a year to follow the wildebeest migration across the park. Rather than asking guests to chase the herds from a fixed base, the camp itself moves, broadly south to north between December and October. Just six spacious canvas tents and a small, dedicated crew sit at the heart of this intentionally light operation.

The camp’s footprint stays deliberately minimal. No permanent structures interrupt the landscape, solar power runs throughout, and the design allows the whole site to pack up and relocate with little lasting trace on the land.

Location and Landscape

Between December and March, the camp sits in the southern Serengeti’s Ndutu region for the calving season, as thousands of wildebeest give birth on the surrounding plains. From May through July, it shifts toward the western and central Serengeti, as herds move toward the Grumeti River. This offers river-crossing drama on a smaller scale than the Mara. From July through November, finally, the camp relocates to the north near the Mara River, for the migration’s most dramatic crossings as herds move between Tanzania and Kenya.

Because the migration’s exact timing varies year to year with rainfall, the camp’s precise siting shifts accordingly. Nomad’s long experience in the ecosystem, however, keeps it consistently well-positioned relative to the herds.

Accommodation

The camp comprises six Meru-style canvas tents, including one family tent with two rooms, accommodating up to twelve guests at any one time. Wide spacing and staggered positioning give each tent genuine privacy. Every tent includes an en-suite bathroom, a bucket shower with ample hot water, and a private veranda overlooking the bush. A separate dining tent, library tent and bar tent, meanwhile, sit around an outdoor fire pit beneath a spreading acacia tree.

Safari Experience

Daily game drives, available on a shared or private vehicle basis, explore the surrounding plains in search of the migration and the area’s resident predators. Short bush walks, in addition, run depending on the camp’s current location. Guests can also arrange hot air balloon safaris at additional cost, generally followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush.

Evenings gather around the fire pit for drinks and conversation, before a full, freshly prepared dinner. Guests are frequently surprised by the quality of cooking achieved from what is, in every other respect, a genuinely mobile camp.

When to Visit

December through March positions the camp in the south for the calving season on the Ndutu plains. May through July, by contrast, brings the camp toward the western and central Serengeti as the migration moves toward the Grumeti River. July through November, finally, sees the camp relocate north for the Mara River crossings, the most sought-after window for witnessing the migration at its most dramatic.

Practical Information

Access depends on the camp’s current location, generally via a flight of one to one and a half hours from Arusha to the nearest airstrip. From there, a scenic drive reaches camp. Children aged 8 and older are welcome, with one family tent available. A minimum stay of two nights is generally recommended.

Combining Serengeti Safari Camp with Other Tanzania Destinations

The camp’s mobility pairs naturally with a stay at one of Nomad’s fixed properties elsewhere in the Serengeti. This gives travellers both the immediacy of a migration-tracking camp and the additional facilities only a permanent lodge can offer. Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire, similarly, both extend into a wider northern Tanzania circuit. Zanzibar, meanwhile, offers a coastal close to the journey.

Our Tanzania Safari Guide covers wider planning. Nearby options, meanwhile, sit within Serengeti Safari Lodges. The full country collection, finally, appears at Luxury Tanzania Safari Lodges.
