Ubuntu Migration Camp

Lamai Wedge (June–November) / Kusini, Southern Serengeti (December–March) — Asilia Africa

Ubuntu Migration Camp relocates twice yearly between two carefully chosen positions in the Serengeti. From June to mid-November, the camp sits in the Lamai Wedge in the far north. This area offers extraordinary walking safari access, with few neighbouring camps or vehicles. From mid-December to mid-March, the camp moves to Kusini in the south. Acacia shade and wide access to the migrating herds define this position, alongside strong big-cat sightings.

The camp’s two locations favour exclusivity as much as wildlife access. Both areas, as a result, carry noticeably lower visitor density than the more established parts of the Serengeti.

Location and Landscape

In the north, the Lamai Wedge gives Ubuntu access to the Mara River and the open plains running to the Kenyan border. River crossings, in addition, typically run from July through October. In the south, meanwhile, the Kusini area’s acacia woodland keeps the camp cool through the heat of the day. Wide views over the surrounding plains, in turn, support strong sightings of lion, cheetah and the gathering herds during calving season.

Accommodation

A recent upgrade refurbished Ubuntu’s tents with new interiors and furnishings, each with an en-suite bathroom and a private veranda. One family-sized tent accommodates up to four guests. Because of its semi-permanent structure, the camp can relocate between its two seasonal sites with minimal lasting footprint on the land.

Safari Experience

Scheduled open-vehicle game drives explore the surrounding plains according to the camp’s current position. Guests aged 12 and older can also join walking safaris in the northern location only, at additional cost and subject to pre-booking. Hot air balloon safaris, meanwhile, run where conditions allow, offering an aerial view over the plains below.

When to Visit

July through October brings the river crossings within reach of the camp’s northern Lamai position, the most sought-after window for migration viewing. January through mid-March, by contrast, brings the drama of the calving season to the camp’s southern Kusini position. The camp closes seasonally from mid-March to May, and again from mid-November to mid-December, between its two operating windows.

Practical Information

From June to mid-November, guests reach Ubuntu via the Lamai airstrip, roughly one hour and 40 minutes by road from camp. From mid-December to mid-March, instead, the Serengeti South airstrip sits roughly 90 minutes away. The camp welcomes children aged 5 and older.

Combining Ubuntu Migration Camp with Other Tanzania Destinations

Ubuntu’s seasonal movement pairs naturally with a stay at a fixed lodge elsewhere in the Serengeti. This gives travellers both the mobility of a migration-tracking camp and the additional facilities a permanent property offers. Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire, similarly, both extend into a wider northern Tanzania circuit. Zanzibar, meanwhile, offers a coastal close to the journey.

Our Tanzania Safari Guide covers wider planning. Nearby options, meanwhile, sit within Serengeti Safari Lodges. The full country collection, finally, appears at Luxury Tanzania Safari Lodges.
