Shamwari Eagles Crag
Shamwari Eagles Crag sits in a deep valley among mountain cliffs on the Shamwari Private Game Reserve. The lodge sits roughly 75 kilometres from Port Elizabeth on the N2, or accessible by private charter flight. The reserve itself spans some 25,000 malaria-free hectares across five of South Africa’s eight biomes. It holds all of the Big Five alongside the endangered black rhino. Eagles Crag has operated as Shamwari’s flagship lodge since reopening in 2018. It’s generally considered the most exclusive of the reserve’s six lodges and one explorer camp.
Setting and Design
The lodge’s setting is its clearest distinguishing feature. Mountain cliffs surround the property, where eagles are regularly seen soaring. The lodge is built from stone, wood and thatch. It genuinely sits within the landscape, rather than imposing on it. An upper deck with dedicated aerial viewing pods looks directly out over the surrounding rock faces. Few other lodges in the Eastern Cape offer this vantage point. Returning guests frequently cite it as the property’s signature experience.
Nine suites make up the lodge, built from glass and stone under thatch roofs, spaced well apart for genuine privacy. Each has a king-size bed, separate seating area and air conditioning. A Nespresso coffee machine and minibar sit alongside an en-suite bathroom with both a bath and shower, plus an outdoor shower. Glass doors open onto a private deck with its own heated plunge pool. As a result, the surrounding cliffs and wildlife stay directly in view from the room itself, rather than requiring a walk to a communal viewing area.
Communal Spaces and Atmosphere
Communal facilities run to a genuinely substantial level for a lodge of this size. A downstairs lounge with a billiard table sits alongside an upstairs lounge with bar and fireplace. The upstairs lounge opens onto the viewing deck. A library and a relaxation retreat round out the indoor spaces, the latter holding two treatment rooms, a hydro bath, steam room and sauna. A swimming pool and a gift boutique complete the offering. The overall register is opulent rather than rustic. Several guests, in fact, describe the atmosphere as feeling like a private retreat, despite the lodge holding up to 18 guests at any one time.
Eagles Crag sets a minimum guest age of 12, distinguishing it clearly from Shamwari’s more family-oriented properties. As a result, the lodge is generally recommended for couples specifically because of this adults-focused atmosphere. Game drives run twice daily, in open 4×4 vehicles with an experienced ranger. These run in the calmer light of sunrise and sunset. Guided bush walks are also available for travellers wanting time on foot. Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis. This includes all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, and the twice-daily drives.
Conservation
Beyond the lodge itself, Shamwari’s broader conservation programme is a genuine point of distinction for the reserve as a whole. The property has held the World’s Leading Conservation Company title since 1998. It operates wildlife sanctuaries in partnership with the Born Free Foundation. These rescue big cats from captivity in zoos, circuses and private ownership elsewhere in the world. Guests at Eagles Crag can visit these sanctuaries and the reserve’s wildlife rehabilitation centre as part of a stay. This gives the lodge’s setting a conservation dimension beyond conventional game viewing.
