Tsala Treetop Lodge
Tsala Treetop Lodge sits within the same private, gated estate as Hunter’s Country House and Zinzi Restaurant. The estate runs between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. It occupies a different register entirely, raised among the indigenous forest canopy rather than set in open gardens. The lodge is built specifically for couples wanting privacy and quiet, rather than a family-oriented stay. The Hunter family owns and runs both properties. Tsala is generally described, including by the Hunters themselves, as the more romantic and exclusive of the two.
Architecture and Suites
The lodge’s suites are built from stone, wood and glass, raised high above the forest floor. Elevated wooden walkways connect them, keeping guests’ movement around the property entirely separate from the ground below. Each suite has its own private deck with a small infinity plunge pool and sun loungers. A sitting room with a wood fire sits alongside it. This matters here, since this stretch of forest cools noticeably in the evenings. Sliding glass doors mean the line between indoors and outdoors essentially disappears when open. This puts guests directly into the forest canopy, rather than simply looking at it.
Tsala’s main building uses stone and blackwood columns. The property also includes its own wine cellar, generally well regarded by guests who’ve explored it during a stay. The lodge’s glass-walled dining room serves à la carte lunch and dinner, with views directly into the surrounding canopy. This forms one part of the wider estate’s four-restaurant offering, alongside Zinzi, Sage and The Conservatory at neighbouring Hunter’s.
Romance and Practicalities
The estate also includes the Chapel in the Forest, an intimate chapel built in 1997. It seats up to fifty guests, and hosts weddings on the property. This signals how seriously Tsala in particular is positioned for romantic occasions, honeymoons and anniversaries, rather than general family travel. The distinction matters practically too. Tsala sets a minimum guest age of ten. Younger children, by contrast, are directed to Hunter’s Country House next door, which has the facilities to accommodate them properly. As a result, couples wanting a child-free stay can effectively split a group across both properties, while family members travel separately at Hunter’s, sharing the same estate and restaurants.
Beyond the lodge itself, the surrounding area offers the same range of activities available to guests at Hunter’s. Horse riding, mountain biking, a treetop canopy tour and visits to nearby animal and bird sanctuaries all feature. Whale, dolphin and seal watching along the coast, in addition, runs particularly well from July through November. Plettenberg Bay’s beaches and the Knysna Heads both sit within easy reach by car.
