Earth Lodge

Earth Lodge

Earth Lodge sits sunken into a slope within Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve. It’s part of a collection themed “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.” Earth Lodge represents tomorrow. The architecture draws on Earth Shelter design from the Middle Ages. Buildings are excavated into a site’s slope, with sand and vegetation put back onto the roofs. The lodge, as a result, sits virtually invisible against the surrounding bushveld. It’s so discreet that elephants occasionally graze directly on top of the buildings.

Architecture and Design

Arrival here is deliberate. A hidden corridor draws guests inward before the space opens dramatically onto uninterrupted views across grasslands and a waterhole. Curved lines, natural textures and an unadorned finish define the interior. The team achieved this by blending straw, stone and pigment into the cement plaster. Thirteen suites and a private Amber Villa make up the lodge. Each suite includes a private plunge pool, glass-fronted bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers, and individually crafted furniture. Impala horn-shaped table legs and water lily-inspired tabletops carry the design’s natural inspiration through to the smallest details.

The Amber Villa extends the experience further. It sleeps up to six guests across two bedrooms, with its own lounge, drinks bar, mini office and private safari vehicle. An underground wine cellar holds more than 6,000 bottles. This ranks among the most extensive collections of any safari lodge in the region. A library, art gallery and meditation garden round out the property’s quieter spaces.

Dining, Wellness and Family Policy

Dining overlooks the waterhole, or moves to an outdoor boma sculpted from tree roots. The culinary team works flexibly around dietary needs, drawing on fresh, seasonal ingredients for a contemporary take on local flavours. A Day Bar lets guests dip their feet in ankle-deep water while dining. This distinctive touch sits unique to Earth Lodge within the wider Sabi Sabi collection.

The Amani Spa & Wellness offers treatment rooms, a Zen meditation garden and a cleansing Pango cave. Twice-daily game drives and guided bush walks run with an experienced ranger and Shangaan tracker. These cover the unfenced border Sabi Sand shares with Kruger National Park. Children are only permitted when the lodge is booked on an exclusive-use basis. This sets it apart from Sabi Sabi’s other lodges, which run a dedicated kids’ programme. As a result, Earth Lodge functions best as an adults-focused retreat, or a fully private booking for extended family or friends.
