Idube Game Reserve
Idube Game Reserve sits within the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, designed and built by owner Louis Marais. It’s now one of the oldest established lodges in the reserve. The lodge traverses roughly 10,000 hectares of the wider Sabi Sand. It has recently undergone an extensive transformation, elevating the safari experience while retaining the warm, authentic charm for which it’s long been known. As a result, Idube pairs a genuinely good-value position within a famously expensive reserve with a level of polish that wasn’t always there in its earlier years.
Setting and Accommodation
An indigenous garden shaded by tall jackalberry trees surrounds the lodge, visited daily by nyala and warthogs the team affectionately calls the welcoming committee. Fourteen suites make up the property, all individually decorated in plush, African-inspired fabrics and textures. Each includes its own plunge pool, alongside access to the main swimming pool. Four Linked Suites, in addition, suit families or groups, with two private rooms connected by a shared outdoor deck and a larger shared plunge pool.
The thatched bar, café-style patio and fire pit give guests several places to gather. A new wine cellar, upgraded dining areas and an extended pool deck round out the recent renovation. Lounges with fireplaces suit cooler winter evenings, while the Baobab Spa offers a quieter retreat between game drives. A swing bridge leads across to the Shadulu Hide, recently expanded, where guests can watch wildlife visit the dam at close range.
Game Viewing and Family Fit
Idube has built a particular reputation for frequent, close-up leopard sightings, drawing photographers specifically for this reason. Morning and evening game drives explore the reserve’s full Big Five terrain in open vehicles, alongside guided bush walks for a different pace. Evening drives also reveal nocturnal species rarely seen elsewhere, including porcupine, aardwolf, genet, serval and brown hyena. More than 300 bird species have been recorded on the reserve, in addition, including Martial, Tawny and Fish Eagles.
Children aged eight and older are welcome at Idube. Idube charges those between 8 and 12 at a discounted rate when sharing their parents’ room. A combination offer, in addition, pairs two nights at Idube with two nights at sister property Lukimbi Safari Lodge, suiting travellers wanting to experience both. For couples and families drawn to genuine value within the Sabi Sand, paired with strong leopard country and a recently refreshed, family-run lodge, however, Idube remains one of the reserve’s most consistently recommended properties.
