Royal Malewane

Royal Malewane

Royal Malewane sits on the Thornybush Private Game Reserve, bordering Kruger National Park in South Africa’s Greater Kruger region. It’s part of Liz Biden’s Royal Portfolio, alongside Birkenhead House and La Residence. The property has built a reputation for genuinely exceptional guiding. Its team includes three of South Africa’s seven FGASA-accredited Master Trackers, all three working in the Kruger area specifically. The wider guiding staff carries more than 300 years of combined bush experience between them.

Four Distinct Lodges

Accommodation spans four distinct lodges across the property, each with its own character. The Lodge at Royal Malewane is the original and most classically styled of the four. It sleeps only 20 guests across eight suites built in a high colonial register, with fireplaces, antique furniture, canopied king beds and Victorian claw-foot baths. The Royal and Malewane Suites within this lodge rank among the largest rooms found at any African safari property. Each comes with a private chef, butler, sole-use game vehicle and four massages per day included, a genuinely separate, ultra-exclusive tier above the standard suites.

Waterside, the second lodge, takes a brighter, more colourful design approach. It overlooks its own private waterhole, making it particularly well suited to families. The two Aloe Suites interconnect, and the Baobab Suite offers two bedrooms. A dedicated games room with a climbing wall and pizza oven keeps younger guests occupied between drives. The Farmstead is the most contemporary of the four, echoing the design language of the group’s Cape Town flagship, The Silo. It has just three rooms and a private four-bedroom house, generally considered the property’s most youthful, design-forward option. Masiya’s Camp completes the collection as the under-canvas alternative, trading thatch for canvas without sacrificing the comfort level found elsewhere on the property.

Family Fit and Villas

Three private-use villas extend the offering further, for families or groups wanting complete separation. Each has multiple bedrooms, private outdoor pools and dedicated staff. Across all four lodges and the villas, private plunge pools and savannah views are close to universal. As a result, a stay at Royal Malewane functions as something close to a 24-hour safari, regardless of which specific accommodation is booked.

Children under 10 are welcome in the villas, the main Lodge suites and Waterside. Farmstead and Masiya’s Camp, by contrast, are reserved for guests over 10, a distinction worth checking carefully when booking. The Royal Rangers programme gives younger guests structured, age-appropriate activities around the reserve, aiming to certify them as “mini rangers” by the end of a stay. Game vehicles can also be fitted with secure sides for additional peace of mind with young children aboard.

Dining, Wellness and Guiding

Dining and wellness follow the same lodge-by-lodge variation as accommodation. The Royal Waters Spa at the main Lodge offers hot and cold African baths, a steam room and a lap pool alongside its treatment menu. Waterside’s Reflections Spa includes a hammam and three treatment rooms. Even the smaller Farmstead and Masiya’s Camp options provide genuinely considered spa experiences despite their compact scale. Game drives and walking safaris run daily, with the reserve’s resident wildlife giving guides ample opportunity to demonstrate their tracking knowledge, even though overall game density on Thornybush runs somewhat lower than the most concentrated parts of the neighbouring Sabi Sand.

For travellers specifically prioritising guiding quality and a genuinely private, flexible safari experience, with sole-use vehicles, tailored itineraries and four distinct accommodation styles to choose between, Royal Malewane remains one of South Africa’s clearest arguments for a “new school” approach to luxury safari.
