Why Visit Amboseli
Last checked 2 November 2026.
Amboseli National Park lies in southern Kenya on the border with Tanzania, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is a compact park of about 392 square kilometres, and it is known for large herds of elephants moving across open plains with the mountain behind them.
What Amboseli is known for
- Elephants. Amboseli is one of the best places in Africa to watch elephant families up close, including very large tuskers and young calves.
- Kilimanjaro. On a clear morning the mountain fills the horizon. Early morning and late afternoon give the best views, and cloud often covers the summit by midday.
- Swamps and birds. Permanent swamps draw wildlife and a long list of water birds, especially in the dry months.
- A compact park. Distances are short, so a stay of two or three nights covers it well.
When to go
The dry months, roughly June to October and January to February, bring open, dusty plains and wildlife gathered around the swamps. The skies are often clearest for Kilimanjaro at those times. It also pairs well with the Mara on a longer Kenya journey. See when to go on safari.
Getting there
Amboseli is a drive of several hours from Nairobi or a short flight to the park’s airstrip. Because it is compact and easy to reach, it works well on a long weekend from Dubai. See Kenya Safari from Dubai and our Eid Al Etihad Kenya safari.
Where to stay
Browse the Amboseli and Chyulu Hills lodges. For a stay entirely your own, see Kibo Villa in Amboseli, one of our private houses.
Combining Amboseli with the Mara
Many guests start with two nights in Amboseli and continue to the Masai Mara. Read our travel guides and the Kenya Safari Guide to plan the sequence.
