Halal and Dietary Needs on Safari
Eating well is part of every journey, and on safari it is entirely possible to keep halal, vegetarian, Jain, kosher or any other diet. What matters is arranging it in advance, because many camps are remote and their supplies are planned weeks ahead.
Halal dining
Arrangements vary from property to property, and we never assume. For each camp and lodge on your journey, we confirm in writing which of these applies before you book:
- A fully halal kitchen, where all meat is halal and alcohol is not used in cooking.
- Halal meat sourced on request, prepared separately for you.
- Vegetarian and seafood menus as an alternative where halal meat cannot be sourced in remote areas.
If a property cannot meet your needs with confidence, we will tell you plainly and suggest an alternative.
Prayer and Ramadan
- Prayer: on request, camps can provide prayer mats and a quiet space, and your guide can share the qibla direction. Game drives can be timed around prayer.
- Ramadan: many camps can arrange an early suhoor and an iftar at sunset, often in a special setting. Please tell us if your dates fall during Ramadan.
- Alcohol-free stays: we can ask camps to remove alcohol from your room or tent.
Other dietary needs
- Vegetarian and vegan: widely catered for across Africa and the Americas.
- Jain: possible at many properties with notice, including meals without root vegetables.
- Kosher: limited in remote areas; sealed kosher meals can sometimes be arranged, so please ask early.
- Allergies and medical diets, including gluten-free and nut-free: always tell us in advance, and carry any medication you need.
How we arrange it
Tell us your needs when you first plan your journey. We pass them to every property in writing, confirm each one’s arrangement, and note them on your itinerary so your guides and camp teams know before you arrive.
For visas, yellow fever and everything else to arrange before you travel, see Before You Travel. If you are planning a journey, we would be pleased to begin with a conversation.
