Mara North Conservancy — along the Mara River
Karen Blixen Camp takes its name from the author of Out of Africa — a reference that signals the camp’s aesthetic sensibility as much as its literary heritage. The design draws on a Scandinavian tradition of clean lines, natural materials and restraint. Tented suites sit on raised wooden platforms along the Mara River within the Mara North Conservancy. The river is the defining feature. Wildlife moves along its banks throughout the day. Early morning drives often begin with elephants or buffalo already active within sight of camp.
Location and Landscape
Mara North Conservancy borders the Maasai Mara National Reserve and lies close to the Mara River crossing areas. Private management keeps vehicle numbers low. Consequently, predator sightings here carry a quality of calm that the main reserve cannot consistently deliver. Lion prides regularly move through the river valleys near camp. Additionally, the riverine forest attracts exceptional birdlife — for guests with a birding interest, the area around camp is productive without needing long drives.
Accommodation
Tented suites sit on raised wooden platforms with private verandas facing the river. The Scandinavian design influence keeps interiors clean and considered — natural materials, contemporary finishes and an understated palette. Large en-suite bathrooms have modern fittings. Tents positioned along the gentle curve of the river bank tend to have the most active wildlife views from the veranda. Additionally, the elevation of the platforms gives a strong sightline across the riverine forest below.
Safari Experience
Game drives access the Mara North Conservancy and the wider Maasai Mara National Reserve. Because the conservancy operates privately, guides go off-road and drive after dark. Night drives consistently produce nocturnal species — serval, aardwolf, bush baby and hunting lion. Walking safaris are available in appropriate areas of the conservancy. Furthermore, the Mara River position gives direct access to the crossing areas during the Great Migration between July and October.
When to Visit
Mara North delivers strong wildlife viewing throughout the year. However, July through October brings the Great Migration. Wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River during this period. The camp’s river position places it close to the crossing areas. December through March brings dry conditions and excellent predator activity. Additionally, April and May offer lush landscapes and lower visitor numbers — the riverine forest and birdlife are particularly rewarding during this period.
