Ishara Mara Safari Lodge

Maasai Mara National Reserve — along the Mara River

Ishara Mara is one of the newer luxury lodges in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. It sits along a stretch of the Mara River in territory that becomes the focal point of the Great Migration between July and October. The name comes from the Swahili word for a sign or signal — a reference to the lodge’s emphasis on reading the landscape and its wildlife rather than simply moving through it.

The design is contemporary rather than period. Floor-to-ceiling canvas and glass fronts, open decks and natural materials define the aesthetic. However, the location is the headline feature. Mara River frontage in the main reserve means the crossings happen directly in front of the camp during peak migration season.

Location and Landscape

The Mara River is the crossing point for wildebeest and zebra as they move north from Tanzania’s Serengeti between July and October. Ishara Mara’s position along the river gives guests direct access to this territory. Crocodile, hippo and a wide range of birdlife are present along the riverbanks throughout the year. Additionally, the surrounding plains support lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant and large herds of plains game in strong numbers.

Because Ishara operates within the main Maasai Mara National Reserve rather than a private conservancy, game drives follow designated roads. However, the Mara River corridor offers some of the strongest game viewing in the entire ecosystem — particularly during the July to October migration window.

Accommodation

The tented suites open entirely onto private decks with river and plains views. Floor-to-ceiling canvas and glass fronts dissolve the boundary between interior and landscape. Each suite has a spacious en-suite bathroom and interiors that use East African craftsmanship and natural materials throughout. The architecture prioritises light, open space and connection to the surrounding terrain.

Safari Experience

Game drives access the Maasai Mara National Reserve’s prime wildlife corridors. The Mara River location places the lodge close to the crossing areas — consequently, migration viewing here requires no long drive across the reserve. Between July and October, wildebeest and zebra gather on the banks near camp. The wildlife activity around camp extends beyond game drives. Hippo, crocodile and riverine birdlife are visible from the decks throughout the day.

Hot air balloon safaris depart nearby in the early morning. Furthermore, guided walks give a different perspective on the river ecosystem beyond what vehicle-based drives reveal.

When to Visit

The Maasai Mara delivers strong wildlife viewing throughout the year. However, July through October is the migration window — wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River during this period. The camp’s river position makes this the strongest season. December through March provides dry conditions and excellent predator activity. Additionally, April and May bring lush green landscapes and notably lower visitor numbers.

Combining Ishara Mara with Other Kenya Destinations

Ishara Mara works well as part of a wider Kenya circuit. Laikipia to the north adds highland terrain and rhino. Samburu brings the frontier ecosystem and the Samburu Special Five. Additionally, the Kenya coast closes a journey naturally at the Indian Ocean.
