Saruni Mara
Saruni Mara
Mara North Conservancy, Maasai Mara — Saruni
Saruni Mara sits on a hilltop in the Mara North Conservancy. Stone-built villas replace the canvas tent as the camp’s architectural language. That choice is unusual in the Mara context. However, the hilltop position matters more than the materials — sweeping views across the plains extend in every direction from the terrace.
The Saruni group operates camps across Kenya and Tanzania. At each property, the design reflects the specific landscape it occupies. Additionally, community involvement and conservation form part of the Saruni operating philosophy across all its sites.

Location and Landscape
Mara North Conservancy occupies the northern edge of the Maasai Mara ecosystem. Private management keeps vehicle numbers low and allows off-road driving and night drives. Consequently, game drives carry a quality of space that the main reserve cannot consistently provide. Lion, leopard, cheetah and elephant move through in strong numbers. Furthermore, the conservancy lies along Great Migration routes between July and October.

Accommodation
The stone villas are the most immediately distinctive feature of Saruni Mara. Natural materials — stone, timber and local craft — define the interiors and connect the architecture to the surrounding hills. Each villa has a private terrace with panoramic conservancy views. Bathrooms are large and well-appointed. The hilltop position gives every room a perspective that canvas camps at lower elevations cannot replicate.
At dawn, the plains below appear in layers of light as the mist lifts off the valleys. For guests who value both design and landscape in equal measure, Saruni Mara delivers both without compromise.

Safari Experience
Game drives access Mara North and the wider Maasai Mara National Reserve. Because the conservancy operates privately, guides go off-road throughout. Night drives run after dark within the conservancy. Walking safaris are also available with experienced guides. However, the hilltop vantage point adds a dimension beyond the drives — guests often spot animals on the plains below without leaving the terrace.
When to Visit
Mara North delivers strong game viewing year-round. However, July through October brings migration herds into the ecosystem. The conservancy’s northern position places the camp close to Mara River crossing areas. December through March provides dry conditions and excellent predator activity. Additionally, April and May offer lush green landscapes and notably lower rates — for travellers who value solitude, this season is worth serious consideration.
Combining Saruni Mara with Other Kenya Destinations
Saruni Mara works well within a wider Kenya circuit. Combining it with Laikipia adds highland terrain and rhino to the itinerary. Samburu to the north brings the frontier ecosystem and the Samburu Special Five. Furthermore, the Kenya coast provides a natural ocean close to any safari journey.
