Wilderness Mara (formerly Little Governors’ Camp)

Wilderness Mara is a camp of 12 tented suites on the edge of a marsh inside the Mara Triangle, in the Masai Mara National Reserve. It opened in July 2026, rebuilt from the former Little Governors’ Camp, and is run by Wilderness.

At a glance

  • Setting: the Mara Triangle, on the western side of the Mara River, at the entry gate to the Triangle and beside the rangers’ post; the Triangle is managed by the Mara Conservancy
  • Size: 12 tented suites, including one family unit, each with an elevated private deck and indoor and outdoor showers
  • Access to both sides of the Mara River by a private footbridge
  • Facilities: a pool, a spa and a gym, with yoga mats in the rooms
  • Activities: morning and afternoon game drives, including sunrise and sunset drives; birding, with more than 470 species recorded; visits to Maasai homesteads; river-crossing excursions in peak season; and community visits to a school, a clinic and a tree nursery
  • Balloon safaris launch beside the camp, run by Governors’ Balloon Safaris

Who it suits

  • Couples and honeymooners who want a contemporary camp with a spa and a gym
  • Birdwatchers and photographers, with a marsh setting and few vehicles at sightings
  • Guests who want the Mara Triangle’s quieter side of the river, with access across the river on foot
  • Guests who prefer a fully inclusive rate over adding up extras

Who it does not suit

  • Guests who want a camp with a long track record: it reopened in 2026, so there is little guest history yet
  • Guests who want a private vehicle guaranteed by default: the camp does not publish its vehicle policy, so we confirm it for each stay
  • Guests who want a classic canvas-camp feel; this is a fully rebuilt, design-led camp

Its place in a route

We use Wilderness Mara as a three-night Mara stay, often after a Reserve camp such as Governors’ Main Camp, for guests who want the Mara Triangle and a more contemporary camp.

Families

Children of all ages are welcome, and there is a family unit. We confirm family arrangements, extra beds and child rates for your dates.

Getting there

Fly from Wilson Airport to Kichwa Tembo airstrip, about 45 minutes, on daily flights with Governors’ Aviation, Air Kenya and Safarilink. The transfer from the airstrip to camp takes about 15 minutes by safari vehicle.

Wilderness Mara (formerly Little Governors' Camp) - wildlife and safari experiences

What the rate includes and excludes

  • Included: accommodation, all meals, local drinks, laundry, all camp experiences including game drives and guided activities, the conservation levy and government taxes
  • Not included: the hot-air balloon safari, which is charged extra
  • We confirm in your quote what is covered for flights, premium drinks and gratuities

What we would choose instead

For a classic camp inside the Reserve with a long-established family offer, we would look at Governors’ Main Camp. For a conservancy camp with walking, Karen Blixen Camp or Kicheche Bush Camp.

Last checked against the property’s own information: October 2026. Details change, so we confirm them again when we quote your itinerary.
