Mahale Safari Lodges

Mahale Mountains National Park sits on the remote shore of Lake Tanganyika, reached almost exclusively for chimpanzee trekking into the forested mountains rising directly behind the lake. Access requires a dedicated flight followed by a boat transfer, and the resulting remoteness keeps visitor numbers genuinely low throughout the year.

At Oloi Shorua, we recommend a single property here, built specifically around the demands and rewards of trekking in this terrain.

Why Mahale is Worth the Journey

  • One of the largest remaining wild chimpanzee populations in Africa
  • A lakeshore setting unlike any other safari region in Tanzania
  • Genuine remoteness, with very few visitors at any time of year
  • Swimming and fishing on Lake Tanganyika as a complement to forest trekking

Luxury Safari Lodge in Mahale

  • Greystoke Mahale — directly on the lakeshore, the base for chimpanzee trekking into the mountains behind

Wildlife in Mahale

  • Wild chimpanzee, the primary draw for most visitors
  • Forest primate species beyond chimpanzee, including red colobus
  • Lake Tanganyika’s freshwater fish species, visible while swimming or snorkelling
  • Strong forest birdlife throughout the surrounding mountains

When to Visit Mahale

The dry season between May and October offers the firmest trekking conditions and the clearest lake visibility. The wetter months bring more demanding trails but a markedly lusher forest.

Planning a Stay in Mahale

Given the travel time involved in reaching Mahale, three nights is generally the minimum for the journey to feel worthwhile. The park is usually visited as a dedicated addition to a wider Tanzania itinerary rather than a quick stop.
