Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

South-Western Crater Rim — &Beyond

CLOSED TILL 2027 FOR REFURBISHMENT

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge sits directly on the crater’s south-western rim, run by &Beyond. Thirty suites spread across three camps, each built into the forest with sweeping views down into the crater floor below. The lodge’s design leans theatrical and maximalist. Chandeliers, hand-carved furniture and curved thatch roofs give it a register closer to a private opera house than a conventional safari lodge.

Location and Landscape

The crater itself holds an exceptionally dense, largely resident population of wildlife within a contained 260-square-kilometre caldera. As a result, game drives here deliver consistently high sighting rates, regardless of season. Black rhino, lion and a vast plains-game population all live within the crater floor, a roughly 45-minute descent from the lodge.

Accommodation

Each of the thirty suites includes hand-carved furniture, a private veranda, and a fireplace for the cold rim evenings. Several suites also include a private butler and a free-standing bathtub positioned for crater views. The three camps — Tree Camp, Crater Camp and Forest Camp — each carry a slightly different architectural mood within the same overall opulent style.

Safari Experience

Daily descents into the crater explore its dense resident wildlife in open 4×4 vehicles. Guided walks along the rim itself, in addition, offer a different pace and perspective above the crater floor. Evenings, finally, gather around the fire before a formal, multi-course dinner, served either communally or privately depending on preference.

When to Visit

The crater offers strong year-round game viewing, thanks to its contained ecosystem and resident wildlife population. As a result, timing here depends more on personal preference for weather and crowds than on any single migration season.

Practical Information

Guests typically reach the lodge by road from Arusha, roughly three to four hours, or by light aircraft to nearby airstrips followed by a transfer. The lodge sits at altitude, and evenings on the rim turn genuinely cold. As a result, warm layers are essential regardless of season.

Combining Ngorongoro Crater Lodge with Other Tanzania Destinations

The lodge’s rim position pairs naturally with a stay in the Serengeti, given the relatively short transfer between the two. Tarangire, similarly, extends easily into a wider northern Tanzania circuit.
