Elewana The Manor at Ngorongoro

Elewana The Manor at Ngorongoro

Karatu, Shangri-La Coffee Estate — Elewana Collection

The Manor at Ngorongoro sits on the Shangri-La Coffee Estate outside Karatu. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Lake Manyara National Park both sit nearby. Cape Dutch architecture defines the property, a genuinely distinctive style in this part of Tanzania. It feels closer to South Africa’s Winelands than the bush camps found elsewhere in the region. Nine cottages hold the lodge’s guest suites, each split into two rooms, alongside a separate family-sized Stable Cottage.

Location and Landscape

The estate sits at altitude in Karatu’s farming country. Views run south over the Mbulu highlands, and north toward the forested edge of the Ngorongoro Crater. Because the lodge sits outside the conservation area itself, no park fees apply to overnight guests. Accommodation options nearby also run broader and more varied than inside the boundary. As a result, the lodge works well as a base for both the crater and Lake Manyara. Each, however, generally requires a separate day trip.

Accommodation

Each of the eighteen Manor Suites includes a private courtyard, deck, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, and a roll-top bath. Period-style furniture, Persian rugs and dark wood finishes carry the Cape Dutch theme through to the interiors. The Stable Cottage, in addition, sleeps up to six across a double and twin bedroom. It also includes its own lounge and a dedicated children’s playroom and bathroom upstairs.

Safari Experience

Game drives into the Ngorongoro Crater or Lake Manyara National Park run with the lodge’s own vehicles and guides. Early starts are generally required, given the distances both destinations involve. Horse riding through the surrounding coffee plantations offers a genuinely different activity from conventional game drives. Guests can also walk or cycle the estate’s grounds, or join a guided coffee tour through the working plantation.

When to Visit

The Manor works well year-round, given its role as a base for two destinations rather than a single migration-dependent one. However, early starts are generally required for either day trip, given the distances involved from this Karatu position.

Practical Information

Guests typically reach the lodge by road from Arusha, roughly two and a half hours. A transfer from nearby airstrips serving the conservation area is also available. A doctor is on hand at the FAME Hospital in Karatu, roughly ten minutes away.

Combining The Manor at Ngorongoro with Other Tanzania Destinations

The Manor’s Karatu position pairs naturally with both Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara, given its central location between the two. Serengeti and Tarangire, similarly, both extend into a wider northern Tanzania circuit.
