Gibb’s Farm sits on a working coffee estate in Karatu, established in 1929. The farm sits on the outer slopes leading up to the Ngorongoro highlands. Between 17 and 21 cottages spread across the farm’s gardens, depending on configuration. This gives the property a genuinely different character from the bush camps and lodges found elsewhere in the region. As a result, a stay here feels closer to a country farm retreat than a conventional safari lodge.
Location and Landscape
Karatu sits below the Ngorongoro Conservation Area’s rim, roughly 45 minutes from the crater gate. The surrounding farmland and forest support genuine biodiversity in their own right, including forest walks and birdwatching directly on the property. Because Gibb’s Farm sits outside the conservation area itself, rates and access here differ from properties directly on the rim.
Accommodation
Each cottage is individually furnished, with private gardens and a genuinely homely, farmhouse style rather than a safari-camp aesthetic. Most rooms include a fireplace, given Karatu’s cooler highland evenings. The farm’s extensive vegetable, herb and flower gardens, in addition, supply much of the kitchen’s produce directly.
Safari Experience
Guided walks through the surrounding coffee estate and forest form a genuine highlight here, distinct from the conventional game drives found elsewhere in the region. The farm also offers a spa using ingredients grown on site, and cooking classes drawing on the kitchen’s own produce. Game drives into the Ngorongoro Crater itself remain available too, roughly 45 minutes away.
When to Visit
Gibb’s Farm works well year-round, given its position as a working farm rather than a wildlife-dependent property. However, the cooler months suit the fireplace-equipped cottages particularly well, and coffee harvest season adds an extra dimension for interested guests.
Practical Information
Guests typically reach the farm by road from Arusha, roughly two and a half hours, or via a transfer from nearby airstrips serving the conservation area. The farm’s relative remoteness from the crater rim itself means a dedicated game drive day is generally required to visit the crater.

Gibb’s Farm pairs naturally with a stay closer to the crater rim, for travellers wanting both the farm’s distinct character and more conventional crater access. Serengeti and Tarangire, similarly, both extend into a wider northern Tanzania circuit.
