Karibu Sametu Camp sits on the eastern edge of the central Serengeti, beside the Ngarenanyuki River, deliberately removed from the busier Seronera corridor. The camp is part of Karibu Camps & Lodges, a locally owned Tanzanian collection, and was the most recently added Serengeti property within their portfolio.
Location and Landscape
The Ngarenanyuki River draws steady wildlife traffic throughout the year, and the camp’s secluded position — roughly 30 minutes from the Seronera airstrip but well away from its main traffic — gives game drives a quieter character than much of central Serengeti. Visitors have reported sightings of tree-climbing lion, cheetah, and leopard directly from the surrounding area.
Accommodation
The camp comprises eighteen tents in total — a mix of standard tents, suites, and two family tents — each with a private veranda and en-suite bathroom with a separate elevated shower area. Tents are unfenced, with wildlife regularly passing directly through camp, and an evening escort service is provided between the dining area and individual tents after dark.
Safari Experience
Game drives run entirely within Serengeti National Park from the moment vehicles leave camp, focused on the surrounding plains and riverine areas. An open-air bar is a popular gathering point before dinner, and the camp’s central position allows for both focused game drives and longer full-day excursions toward Seronera or the Moru Kopjes.
When to Visit
Sametu’s location offers strong year-round game viewing thanks to the Ngarenanyuki River’s permanent water. The migration moves through this part of the Serengeti at points in its annual cycle, adding seasonal density to the area’s already strong resident wildlife base.
Practical Information
The nearest airstrip is Seronera, roughly a 45-minute drive from camp. By road, the camp sits around seven hours from Arusha.
