Lamai Serengeti
Kogakuria Kopje, Northern Serengeti — Nomad Tanzania
Lamai Serengeti is built directly into the boulders of Kogakuria Kopje, close to the Kenyan border in the far north of the Serengeti. Nomad’s founders sited the camp here in the early 1990s. At the time, the surrounding Kogatende area still carried a reputation for poaching activity. As a result, this became the first permanent safari property established in this part of the park. From its elevated rock position, the camp commands views over the Mara River valley and the wider Lamai Wedge, the triangular wilderness pocket the river borders.
Builders deliberately designed the rooms to be seen from, not seen. Open fronts and boulder positioning keep each room largely invisible from the surrounding plains, while still affording its own private outlook.
Location and Landscape
Several Mara River crossing points sit within a short drive of camp. Between July and October, the surrounding plains fill with the migration’s herds attempting the crossing. Outside this window, however, the Lamai Wedge still supports strong resident wildlife year-round. Lion, leopard and rhino count among the more notable sightings, alongside healthy populations of plains game across the surrounding grassland.
Nomad runs an anti-poaching programme in the area, removing thousands of snares since launching. The camp, in addition, supports the nearby Merenga School and Clinic.
Accommodation
Lamai Serengeti comprises twelve rooms split across two distinct camps. The Main Camp holds ten rooms, while the smaller Private Camp offers two, available for exclusive use by groups of up to six. Two of the Main Camp’s rooms come configured as family rooms, each pairing a master bedroom with an adjoining twin room. For larger groups, Mkombe’s House Lamai sits on the opposite side of the kopje. This fully self-contained property includes its own kitchen and staff, accommodating up to ten guests.
Locally sourced, handmade furnishings define every room, a detail found across all of Nomad’s camps. Two natural rock swimming pools, built directly into the kopje, also let guests cool off between activities.
Safari Experience
Daily game drives in open-topped 4×4 vehicles cover the surrounding plains and crossing points. Guides trained to some of the highest standards in East Africa lead these drives, and Nomad’s camp managers are frequently former guides themselves. Guests aged 12 and older can also join walking activities. Bush picnics, sundowners and stargazing round out the camp’s activity list, alongside a curio shop offering Maasai-inspired jewellery and locally sourced coffee.
When to Visit
July through October brings the Mara River crossings within easy reach of camp, the most sought-after window of the year. The remainder of the year, by contrast, offers quieter, exclusive access to the Lamai Wedge’s strong resident wildlife population, with considerably fewer vehicles than the peak crossing months. The camp closes for maintenance from mid-March to the end of May.
Practical Information
Guests reach Lamai Serengeti via the Kogatende airstrip, roughly a 30-minute drive from camp. Children aged 8 and older are welcome at the Main Camp. Only Lamai Private, on an exclusive-use basis, accepts children from age 5. Children aged 12 and older, in addition, may join walking activities. Given the camp’s remote position, a minimum stay of three nights is generally recommended.
Combining Lamai Serengeti with Other Tanzania Destinations
Lamai’s northern position pairs naturally with Nomad’s other Serengeti properties. It also suits a stay further south or central in the park, for travellers wanting both the migration crossings and the contrast of the open plains within a single trip. Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire, similarly, both extend into a wider northern Tanzania circuit. Zanzibar, meanwhile, offers a coastal close to the journey.
Our Tanzania Safari Guide covers wider planning. Nearby options, meanwhile, sit within Serengeti Safari Lodges. The full country collection, finally, appears at Luxury Tanzania Safari Lodges.
