Kusini is Nomad Tanzania’s newest camp, opened among the granite kopjes of the remote southern Serengeti. Nomad has favoured quieter roads and back ways throughout its history. As a result, the operator tends to skirt the busier circuits where wildlife moves more freely. Kusini sits firmly within that tradition. The camp sits west of the Ndutu plains, surrounded by towering kopjes that rise from the surrounding woodland like ancient sentinels.
Local guides sometimes call these kopjes the “cities of the Serengeti.” Each one holds its own hidden world within its hollows and shaded ledges. Together, they support insects, flowers, birds and mammals in genuinely surprising density.
Location and Landscape
Wildlife here changes with the season, much like the landscape itself. During the green months, the southern plains come alive with movement as herds pass through in search of fresh grazing. During the drier periods, by contrast, the area reveals its resident wildlife more clearly. A sense of space, increasingly rare elsewhere in the Serengeti, also sets in. Lion, leopard, cheetah and a strong resident bird population all favour the surrounding kopjes and woodland edges.
Accommodation
Just six spacious canvas tents make up the camp, each set beneath shady trees with an open veranda looking onto the surrounding woodland. A relaxed, characterful mess area anchors the camp, built directly onto the rocks themselves. This space serves long views, sundowners, storytelling and stargazing. In addition, it carries the same blend of simplicity and considered design found throughout Nomad’s other properties.
Safari Experience
Activities extend beyond conventional game drives. Guests can explore on foot where conditions allow. They can also climb the kopjes for sweeping views over the woodland, or simply spend an evening on the rocks watching the sky change colour. Because the camp sits so remotely, sightings here tend to feel more private than in the Serengeti’s more established southern hubs.
Kusini fits naturally into a wider Nomad itinerary, pairing well with Entamanu on the Ngorongoro Crater rim or with Lamai further north. Guests can move between these properties to dance around the Serengeti’s edges. This way, a single trip can take in several genuinely distinct landscapes.
When to Visit
The green months, typically from December through May, bring movement and energy to the surrounding plains as herds pass through. The drier months, by contrast, reveal Kusini’s resident wildlife more clearly. Notably quieter conditions, in addition, set this period apart from the busier Ndutu circuit nearby.
Practical Information
A drive from the southern Serengeti’s nearest airstrips reaches Kusini, with exact routing depending on the season and current road conditions. Guests arrange walking activities directly with guides on site, also depending on conditions.
Combining Kusini with Other Tanzania Destinations
Kusini pairs naturally with Entamanu on the Ngorongoro Crater rim or with Lamai Serengeti further north. This allows travellers to dance around the Serengeti’s edges within one trip. Tarangire, similarly, extends into a wider northern Tanzania circuit, and Zanzibar offers a coastal close to the journey.
