Mpingo Ridge sits within Tarangire National Park, part of a Lemala circuit that runs from Arusha through Tarangire, Ngorongoro and into the Serengeti. Tarangire holds some of the largest dry-season elephant aggregations in East Africa, drawn to the Tarangire River through a landscape defined by ancient baobab trees, and Mpingo Ridge’s position takes advantage of this defining seasonal dynamic.
Location and Landscape
Tarangire’s elephant herds concentrate around remaining water sources through the dry season between June and October, with Mpingo Ridge positioned to make the most of this concentration. Beyond elephant, the park supports lion, leopard, and substantial populations of giraffe, zebra and buffalo across its woodland and open grassland.

Game drives explore Tarangire’s river corridor and surrounding woodland, with elephant viewing at its strongest during the dry season months. Tarangire’s lower visitor density relative to the Serengeti or Ngorongoro gives game drives here a notably quieter character.
When to Visit
June through October brings Tarangire’s strongest elephant viewing, as the dry season concentrates herds around the river and remaining water sources. The wetter months bring a greener, more dispersed landscape with considerably fewer visitors.
