Tarangire Safari Lodges

Tarangire is arguably the most underused park in Tanzania’s northern circuit. During the dry season between June and October, the Tarangire River becomes the only permanent water source across a wide area, drawing elephant herds of extraordinary size to its banks through a landscape defined by ancient baobab trees.

At Oloi Shorua, we recommend a small collection of lodges within and around the park, suited to a two-night addition at the start or end of a wider northern circuit itinerary.

Why Tarangire is Worth a Dedicated Stop

  • Some of the largest dry-season elephant aggregations in East Africa
  • Considerably lower vehicle numbers than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro
  • A private wildlife corridor connecting to Lake Manyara, used by elephant moving between the two parks
  • Strong walking safari tradition, led by guides with deep familiarity with this specific landscape

Wildlife in Tarangire

  • Large elephant herds, particularly through the dry season
  • Resident lion and leopard populations
  • Significant birdlife, supported by the river’s year-round water
  • Giraffe, zebra and substantial buffalo herds across the woodland

When to Visit Tarangire

June to October brings the strongest game viewing, as the dry season concentrates wildlife along the river. The wetter months bring a greener landscape and considerably fewer visitors, though sightings are less concentrated.

Planning a Stay in Tarangire

Two nights at the start or end of a northern circuit itinerary is generally sufficient to add genuine ecological contrast without overextending the trip.
