Phinda Mountain Lodge
Hilltop, Phinda Private Game Reserve — &Beyond
Phinda Mountain Lodge sits perched on a hilltop, with wraparound views over the Ubombo mountain range and the surrounding Zululand bush. Twenty-five rooms make the lodge the largest in the Phinda collection. As a result, it suits families and larger groups better than the reserve’s smaller, more intimate lodges.
Location and Landscape
The hilltop position gives genuinely panoramic views over Phinda’s varied terrain below. Open decks throughout the lodge make the most of this outlook. Because of its elevation, the lodge also catches cooling breezes that the valley floor below doesn’t always receive.
Accommodation
Three room types make up the lodge: Suites, Cottages and a Family Suite. Several rooms include private plunge pools, and interleading family cottages suit travellers with children. Spacious, comfortable design runs throughout, built specifically with togetherness in mind.
Safari Experience
Twice-daily game drives explore the reserve’s Big Five range, with a particular reputation for cheetah and black rhino sightings. Children can join cooking activities with the lodge’s chefs, alongside more conventional game viewing. Quiet evenings under the stars, in addition, round out the experience for families wanting a slower pace.
When to Visit
Phinda offers strong year-round game viewing, thanks to its coastal rainfall pattern and varied habitats. The dry winter months, generally May through September, bring clearer sightings as vegetation thins.
Practical Information
Guests reach the lodge via Phinda’s own private airstrip, served from Johannesburg or Durban. By road, the drive from Durban runs roughly three to three and a half hours.
Combining Phinda Mountain Lodge with Other South Africa Destinations
Mountain Lodge pairs naturally with Phinda’s other lodges for families wanting to combine settings within one stay. The Eastern Cape and Greater Kruger, similarly, both extend into a wider South Africa safari circuit.
Our South Africa Safari Guide covers wider planning. For nearby options, see East Coast.
