Shamwari Explorer Camp

Shamwari Explorer Camp

Shamwari Explorer Camp strips the safari experience back to its original form: walking, sleeping under canvas, and gathering around a fire each night. The camp sits perched on a plateau within the Shamwari Private Game Reserve, surrounded by one of the reserve’s distinctive basalt and granite extrusions. As a result, it offers a genuinely different register from any of Shamwari’s permanent lodges, built specifically for guests wanting an authentic, on-foot safari rather than vehicle-based game drives.

Setting and Format

The camp operates seasonally, from October to May, on a fixed schedule of Tuesday and Wednesday, or Friday and Saturday departures, with an optional third night available on request. A minimum two-night stay is required. Three tents make up the camp, each sleeping two people on fold-out stretchers with duvets and pillows. Furnishings stay deliberately simple: a cupboard, an LED light, an outside hand basin and a hammock. This isn’t a glamping product dressed up as adventure travel. It’s the genuine article, evoking the safaris of a century ago rather than recreating their aesthetic alone.

Walking and Dining

Days centre on walking, trailing lion prides and rhinos on foot through the reserve’s 25,000 hectares, guided throughout by an experienced ranger. Birding, cultural history and the area’s natural history all feature alongside the wildlife tracking itself. Evenings close around the campfire, with culinary feasts presented using proper silverware despite the rustic setting. Guests wake to tea and coffee served directly in front of their tents, the day’s first small comfort before another walk begins.

Children under 16 aren’t permitted, given the physical demands and unfenced nature of a walking safari. Guests considering Explorer Camp should come prepared for a genuinely different pace from a conventional lodge stay, without Wi-Fi or the comforts found elsewhere on the reserve. For travellers specifically seeking that trade-off, it remains one of the more distinctive safari experiences in the Eastern Cape.
