Tengile River Lodge

Tengile River Lodge

Tengile River Lodge sits on the Sand River within the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, one of &Beyond’s newest properties in the area. The name means “tranquility” in the Tsonga language. Nine suites sit elevated above the riverbed, tucked into a cool riverine forest. As a result, guests get a genuinely tranquil position, despite sitting within one of Africa’s most concentrated Big Five reserves.

Design and Setting

Suites at Tengile rank among the most architecturally striking in the Sabi Sand, designed by Nicholas Plewman, who also led the redesign of Mombo and &Beyond Sandibe in Botswana. Each suite includes a private bathroom and outdoor shower, a lounge, dining area and bar, alongside a private deck, swimming pool and outdoor seating. Glass windows and doors open the interior to the surrounding riverine forest. One suite, in addition, suits families travelling together.

The lodge sits within easy reach of both the Sand and Sabie Rivers, and at the unfenced border with Kruger National Park. Tengile also shares traversing rights with Mala Mala and Lion Sands, extending game viewing well beyond its own 10,500-hectare concession. The reserve carries a strong reputation for leopard sightings, alongside rhino, cheetah and the rest of the Big Five.

Activities and Family Fit

Day and night game drives explore the private concession with an experienced ranger and tracker team, alongside interpretive bush walks revealing smaller details a vehicle might miss. The Sabi Sand records more than 500 bird species, making this a genuine destination for birders as well as Big Five travellers. A massage area and well-equipped gym round out the lodge’s facilities between drives.

Children aged 12 and older are welcome at Tengile, with two interconnecting suites available for families. No triple room options exist, however, worth noting when planning a group stay. Newlyweds receive a 50% discount for the bride when staying a minimum of two nights. For couples, honeymooners and families with older children wanting one of the Sabi Sand’s most striking design statements alongside genuinely exceptional game viewing, Tengile River Lodge remains one of the reserve’s standout newer properties.
