Kinasi Lodge - setting and dining

Kinasi Lodge

Kinasi Lodge is Mafia Island’s polish leader — antique furnishings, a pool overlooking Chole Bay, and an on-site dive centre and spa. Mafia sits south of Zanzibar within the 822 km² Mafia Island Marine Park, and remains deliberately low-key: a marine and diving destination rather than a beach resort.

Whale Sharks and Diving

Whale shark season runs October to March, peaking November to February, when sightings are close to guaranteed. Uniquely, the sharks swim close enough inshore near Kilindoni that snorkelling is often enough to see them — diving isn’t required. Chole Bay itself holds thirteen dive sites, with a further eight outside the bay offering walls, caves and pinnacles.

A Word on the Beaches

Worth setting expectations honestly: Mafia’s beaches are mediocre and mangrove-heavy compared to Zanzibar. This is a marine and diving destination, not a beach-lounging one — best sold as the ocean-wildlife extension to a mainland safari rather than a Zanzibar alternative.

Getting There

Coastal Aviation and Auric Air both fly direct from Dar es Salaam to Mafia, a genuinely easy thirty-to-thirty-five-minute hop with around thirty-five weekly departures between the two airlines — far more frequent and simple than reaching Mahale, Gombe or Kilwa. Mafia is also around forty-five minutes from Selous and from Zanzibar directly, making it easy to combine all three. From Kilindoni airstrip, it’s roughly a twenty-minute drive to Utende Beach, where Kinasi and the other dive lodges cluster around Chole Bay. Marine Park entry is paid in cash or by card directly at the gate, around $24 per person per day, and isn’t prepayable through operators.

Best For

Divers and ocean-wildlife travellers wanting a genuine whale shark encounter, ideally combined with a mainland safari or Zanzibar rather than as a standalone beach trip.
