Sanctuary Olonana
Mara River, Maasai Mara — Sanctuary Retreats
Sanctuary Olonana sits on the banks of the Mara River in the greater Maasai Mara ecosystem. The lodge is one of the most established riverfront properties in the Mara — its reputation built on a combination of contemporary design, attentive service and a location that places guests directly on one of Africa’s most important wildlife corridors.
The suites open entirely toward the river. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls, expansive verandas and freestanding bathtubs facing the water define the accommodation. Furthermore, the riverine forest surrounding the camp attracts wildlife and birdlife that make the time between drives as rewarding as the drives themselves.

Location and Landscape
The Mara River is the crossing point for wildebeest and zebra during the Great Migration between July and October. Olonana’s river position means the crossing activity happens directly in front of the camp during this period. Hippo, crocodile and an exceptional range of water birds are present along the riverbank throughout the year. Additionally, the surrounding plains support lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant and large herds of plains game in strong numbers year-round.

Accommodation
The suites combine contemporary design with natural materials and a strong orientation toward the river. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls open onto expansive private verandas. Large en-suite bathrooms feature freestanding bathtubs and outdoor showers facing the surrounding forest. The interiors work in a palette drawn from the landscape — calm, well-considered and unhurried in atmosphere. Each suite delivers an uninterrupted river view from the bed, the bath and the veranda.

Safari Experience
Game drives access the Maasai Mara’s prime wildlife corridors. The river location places the lodge close to the crossing areas — consequently, migration viewing requires no long drive. Between July and October, wildebeest gather on the banks nearby. Walking safaris and cultural visits to Maasai communities are also available. Additionally, the deck and riverbank areas produce their own wildlife encounters throughout the day without leaving camp.
When to Visit
The Maasai Mara delivers strong wildlife viewing throughout the year. However, July through October is the migration window and the strongest season for the river location. December through March brings dry conditions and excellent predator activity. Additionally, April and May offer lush green landscapes and lower visitor numbers — the riverine forest at Olonana is particularly rewarding during this period.
Combining Olonana with Other Kenya Destinations
Sanctuary Olonana works well as part of a wider Kenya circuit. Laikipia to the north adds highland terrain and rhino. Samburu brings the frontier ecosystem and the Samburu Special Five. Furthermore, the Kenya coast closes a journey naturally at the Indian Ocean.
