The Definitive Mara-Serengeti Crossing

12 nights across Kenya and Tanzania. Two expressions of the Masai Mara, the heart of the Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater — one migration, followed from both ends.

Why This Sequence

This is not five separate stops booked in sequence. Each place has been chosen for what it adds to the one before it. Il Moran and Ishara sit within a short drive of each other in the same stretch of the Mara, yet represent two entirely different expressions of it — fifty years of unbroken tradition, then a modern reinvention of what a Mara camp can be. From there, a private charter to Nairobi and onward to Nyaruswiga carries the journey into the heart of the Serengeti’s short-grass plains, where the same herds that pass through the Mara spend the rest of the year. The journey closes at Ngorongoro, where the crater concentrates an entire ecosystem into a single, self-contained view — a fitting last chapter after days spent following the same migration across open ground.

1 Night — Nairobi

The journey begins with a VIP arrival through Nairobi’s General Aviation terminal, bypassing the main international arrivals process entirely. From there, a short transfer to one night in the city — either Hemingways Nairobi or Fairmont Norfolk Nairobi, depending on preference — before the safari begins in earnest the following morning.

3 Nights — Governors’ Il Moran Camp, Masai Mara

Il Moran is the flagship of the original Governors’ Collection, family-run since the camps first opened in 1972 — among the very first permanent tented camps in the Mara. Just ten tents line a bend of the Mara River, in a stretch of riverine forest that has barely changed in fifty years. This is where the Mara’s own history begins.

3 Nights — Ishara, Masai Mara

Ishara sits on the Talek River, a short drive from Il Moran, and tells a different kind of story — a camp built through a personal relationship with the Maasai family who hold the land, rather than inherited from decades of institutional history. The result is a modern, considered reinterpretation of the same wilderness Il Moran has watched over since 1972.

3 Nights — One Nature Nyaruswiga, Central Serengeti

Guests reassemble in Nairobi before a separate charter carries the journey onward to Tanzania — the same considered approach as the arrival, rather than a single continuous hop across the border. Nyaruswiga sits in the Serengeti’s short-grass plains — the same ecosystem as the Mara, seen from its other end. Where Il Moran and Ishara show the river crossings, Nyaruswiga shows where the herds live for the rest of the year.

2 Nights — Ngorongoro Crater

The journey closes at Ngorongoro, where an entire ecosystem sits contained within a single volcanic caldera — a different register of wildlife-viewing after days spent following the migration across open ground, and a considered final chapter rather than one more stop.

Planning This Journey

Given the private charters and the caliber of properties involved, this journey is quoted individually rather than from a fixed reference figure — as with every Oloi Shorua itinerary, pricing is confirmed during planning, not fixed in advance.

If The Mara–Serengeti Crossing is the kind of journey you are considering, we would be pleased to begin with a conversation.
