Why Visit Laikipia
Last checked 2 November 2026.
Laikipia is a high plateau in central Kenya, north of Mount Kenya and across the equator. Much of it is made up of private ranches and conservancies, which means fewer vehicles and a wider range of activities than the national parks allow.
What Laikipia is known for
- Freedom to explore. Many properties offer walking safaris, horseback riding, camel trips and night drives.
- Rare wildlife. Laikipia is home to black rhino, African wild dog and Grevy’s zebra, as well as elephants and big cats.
- Space and quiet. Conservancies limit visitor numbers, so sightings are private.
- Landscape. Cool highland air, open plains and views of Mount Kenya.
When to go
Laikipia can be visited all year and is a good choice when the Mara is busy. See safari in July and August and when to go on safari.
Combining Laikipia
Many guests pair Laikipia with the Masai Mara, and some add Samburu or the coast. See Laikipia and the Mara in seven days and the explorers route.

Quick answers
Is Laikipia worth visiting?
Yes. It offers activities that the national parks do not, such as walking and night drives, and it is much quieter than the Mara.
How many days do you need in Laikipia?
Three nights is a good length, with time for several different activities.
Can you combine Laikipia with the Masai Mara?
Yes, and it is a popular pairing. Laikipia is quiet and active, and the Mara is classic open plains.
Do I need a yellow fever vaccination for Kenya?
Requirements depend on your route and recent travel, including connections and any border crossing between Kenya and neighbouring countries. See our yellow fever vaccination guide, and speak to a travel clinic about malaria prevention before you go. A yellow fever certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination.
