Safari in July and August: Beyond the Crowds

Last checked 2 November 2026.

July and August are the busiest months of the safari year. The weather is dry, the grass is short and the Great Migration reaches the Mara River. They also coincide with the UAE summer break, so many families travel then. With some planning, you can have a quiet safari in the middle of peak season.

Why July and August are popular

  • Dry weather, clear skies and short grass make wildlife easy to see.
  • Wildebeest and zebra herds reach the northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara. See Great Migration safaris.
  • Wildlife gathers around permanent water in many other parks, which suits the dry months.

How to avoid the crowds

  • Choose a conservancy. Private conservancies limit the number of camps and vehicles. See the Mara conservancies.
  • Book a private vehicle. You set the pace and avoid queues at sightings.
  • Book early. The best camps fill many months ahead for these dates.
  • Choose a quieter region. Laikipia, Samburu and Amboseli have good wildlife in the dry season and fewer visitors.

Other dry-season destinations

The dry southern winter is also a good time for Botswana, Zambia and South Africa. See Botswana and Zambia. In Tanzania, Tarangire is at its best from June.
