Why Visit Samburu
Last checked 2 November 2026.
Samburu National Reserve lies in northern Kenya, about 350 kilometres from Nairobi. At 165 square kilometres it is small, but the Ewaso Ng’iro River runs through it and draws elephants, big cats and many other animals to the banks. The landscape is drier and more rugged than the Mara, and the wildlife is different.
What Samburu is known for
- Dry-country species. Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and beisa oryx are found here and are rarely seen further south.
- Elephants and big cats. Lion, cheetah and leopard are all seen, and elephants come to the river daily.
- Birdlife and crocodiles. The river attracts more than 350 bird species and large numbers of Nile crocodiles.
- Fewer visitors. It is much quieter than the Mara.
When to go
Samburu can be visited all year, and the dry months bring wildlife to the river. It is a good alternative when the Mara is full. See safari in July and August and when to go on safari.
Combining Samburu
It works well as the first stop of a longer Kenya journey, followed by Laikipia and the Mara. See the explorers route and the Kenya Safari Guide.

Quick answers
Is Samburu worth visiting?
Yes, especially if you want wildlife that is not found in the Mara, such as Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and gerenuk. It is also much quieter.
How many days do you need in Samburu?
Two to three nights is usually enough because the reserve is small.
How do you get to Samburu from Nairobi?
Most guests take a short flight to a Samburu airstrip. The road journey is long.
Do I need a yellow fever vaccination for Kenya?
Requirements depend on your route and recent travel, including connections and any border crossing between Kenya and neighbouring countries. See our yellow fever vaccination guide, and speak to a travel clinic about malaria prevention before you go. A yellow fever certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination.
