Where to Go on Your First Safari
Last checked 2 November 2026.
The best first safari is the one that suits how you like to travel, not the one with the longest list of animals. Most of the continent’s classic wildlife can be seen on a first trip, so the choice comes down to time, season, privacy and what you want the days to feel like.
The classic East African safari
Kenya and Tanzania offer open plains, big cats and, in season, the Great Migration. Kenya is closer to Dubai, with direct flights to Nairobi of around five hours. Tanzania’s Serengeti is larger and takes more internal travel, which suits a longer trip. See Kenya Safari from Dubai and Tanzania Safari from Dubai.
If you only have a long weekend
Choose Kenya. The Masai Mara or Amboseli is a short flight from Nairobi, and Nairobi is one hour behind Dubai. For the UAE National Day weekend, see our Eid Al Etihad Kenya safari.
If you want privacy
Private conservancies and exclusive-use houses keep vehicles and other guests to a minimum, and a private vehicle with your own guide lets you set the pace. Start with our private houses and the Mara conservancies.
If you are travelling with children
Kenya and South Africa are both well suited to families, and many camps run activities for younger guests. Age limits differ by property and by activity, so we check them before booking. See family safaris and travelling with children.
If you want something other than big cats
Botswana’s Okavango Delta offers water-based safaris, and Zambia and Zimbabwe are known for walking safaris, all covered in Southern Africa Safari from Dubai. Uganda and Rwanda are about gorilla trekking rather than classic game drives; see Uganda and Rwanda from Dubai.
Three ways to decide
- Start with your dates. The season shapes what you will see. Our seasons guide sets it out by region.
- Start with your time. Four to seven days is a practical range for a first safari from Dubai.
- Start with who is travelling. Couples, families and groups of friends each want a different pace and a different kind of camp.
Quick answers
What is the best country for a first safari?
Kenya and Tanzania are the most common choices for a first safari because they combine open plains, big cats and, in season, the Great Migration. The right one depends on your dates, how much time you have and how private you want the trip to be.
How many days do you need for a first safari?
Four to seven days is a practical range for a first safari from Dubai. It leaves time to settle in and see a good range of wildlife, and a longer trip allows a second location.
Can you do a safari from Dubai over a long weekend?
Yes. A short Kenya safari is workable around a UAE public holiday, because direct flights to Nairobi take around five hours and Kenya is one hour behind Dubai.
