Governors’ Camp Collection — Maasai Mara

Maasai Mara National Reserve — along the Mara River

Governors’ Camp Collection is one of the oldest safari names in the Maasai Mara. The collection has operated along the Mara River since the early 1970s. Few brands are as closely associated with the evolution of safari travel in Kenya. However, its longevity is not the reason to choose it. The location is.

The camps sit in the main Maasai Mara National Reserve rather than a private conservancy. This means no night drives or off-road access. In contrast, it means prime position in the heart of the reserve — close to the Mara River, close to the crossing areas and close to consistently strong game country.

Location and Landscape

The Mara River forms the western boundary of the reserve’s most productive game area. Open plains, riverine forest and seasonal marshland coexist within a short drive of camp. Consequently, the wildlife variety is high throughout the year. During July to October, the river becomes the crossing point for wildebeest and zebra moving between Tanzania and Kenya. The camps’ river proximity places guests closer to the crossings than most alternatives in the reserve.

The Camps

Governors’ Camp

Governors' Camp — classic tented camp along the Mara River, Maasai Mara

The original Governors’ Camp sits along the Mara River bank. It is the largest and most established property in the collection. Classic canvas tents, strong guiding and efficient safari logistics define the experience here. For first-time Mara visitors, it provides a thorough introduction to the reserve’s wildlife and rhythms.

Little Governors’ Camp

Little Governors’ Camp offers a quieter and more intimate experience. Guests reach it by boat across the Mara River followed by a short walk — an arrival that immediately separates it from the main camp in character. The setting surrounds a marsh that attracts birdlife and wildlife close to the tents. Additionally, the smaller scale produces a more personal atmosphere throughout a stay.

Il Moran

Il Moran is the most refined property in the collection. It takes its name from the Maasai warrior tradition. Furthermore, it carries that sense of distinction into its design — more polished in finish than the other camps while retaining the classic Mara character. Il Moran suits couples and travellers who want a higher level of comfort without leaving the classic reserve setting behind.

Accommodation

Across the collection, the design stays rooted in the classic East African tented safari tradition. Canvas tents face the river or the plains. Interiors are understated and comfortable without competing with the landscape. The collection succeeds by remaining true to a traditional safari character rather than following contemporary design trends.

Safari Experience

Game drives access the Maasai Mara National Reserve’s prime wildlife corridors. The Mara River position gives strong access to predator country and migration viewing. However, the reserve setting means game drives follow designated roads rather than going off-road. For travellers who want the classic Mara experience — open vehicles, open plains, strong wildlife — the collection delivers this consistently.

Hot air balloon safaris depart nearby in the early morning. Birdwatching along the river and marsh areas rewards guests who spend time on foot around camp. Additionally, cultural visits to Maasai communities in the surrounding area provide context for the landscape and its people.

When to Visit

Resident wildlife in the Mara makes game viewing strong throughout the year. However, July through October delivers the Great Migration — wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River in large numbers during this period. The camps’ river location gives guests direct access to the crossing areas. December through March delivers dry conditions and strong predator activity. Additionally, April and May bring lush green landscapes and considerably lower visitor numbers.

Governors’ Camp remains one of the most evocative places in the Mara — a classic riverside camp that captures something of what early safari travel in Kenya felt like, without pretending to be something it is not. The location along the river is genuinely hard to replicate.

Combining Governors’ with Other Kenya Destinations

Governors’ works well as part of a classic Kenya circuit. Laikipia to the north adds highland terrain and rhino. Samburu adds the frontier ecosystem and the Samburu Special Five. Additionally, the Kenya coast — Diani, Watamu or Lamu — closes a journey naturally at the Indian Ocean.
