&Beyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge
Western Serengeti National Park — &Beyond
&Beyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge sits on the banks of a tributary of the Grumeti River. The lodge occupies the remote western reaches of Serengeti National Park. Few other lodges operate in this section of the park. As a result, the area stays lightly visited, and guests get a genuinely private wildlife experience. Sightings here often happen without another vehicle in view.
The lodge’s circular design echoes the form of a traditional Maasai manyatta. Kitenge fabrics and stone walls finish the interiors. Colour palettes, meanwhile, draw from the fishing communities of nearby Lake Victoria.
Location and Landscape
The western Serengeti carries a different wildlife profile from the park’s busier central and northern areas. Lion prides here can number into the dozens. The riverine forest along the Grumeti’s tributaries, in addition, shelters black-and-white colobus monkeys found nowhere else in the Serengeti. Resident hippo pods occupy the water directly below the lodge. Large herds of plains game, meanwhile, move through the surrounding grassland alongside hyena clans and a substantial predator population.
Between June and July, the Great Migration passes directly through this stretch of the park. Wildebeest, zebra and other herbivores cross the Grumeti River during this window. The presence of some of Africa’s largest Nile crocodiles, however, makes the crossing considerably more dramatic.
Accommodation
The lodge offers ten river-facing suites, including one family suite with an additional smaller bedroom for children. Each suite includes an oversized bed and a freestanding bath. An indoor shower, too, looks out over the river, alongside a private plunge pool. Natural materials and locally inspired textiles, throughout, give the spaces a light, airy feel.
A rim-flow swimming pool in the main lodge area looks directly over the river’s seasonal hippo pools. An interactive kitchen, in addition, invites guests to help plan and prepare elements of their own meals alongside the lodge’s chefs.
Safari Experience
Twice-daily game drives explore the surrounding plains and riverine forest. These frequently encounter large lion prides, hyena clans and resident plains game. They also reach the colobus monkeys specific to this part of the park. Because so few other lodges operate here, game drives carry a markedly lower density of other vehicles than the park’s central or northern areas.
A traditional boma hosts night-time dining, featuring artisanal pizzas and whole baked fish. This nods to the fishing traditions of the nearby Great Lakes region. A gym and in-room African wellness treatments, meanwhile, round out the lodge’s facilities. &Beyond’s WILDchild programme, in addition, runs alongside standard activities. It engages younger guests in nature walks, tracking and storytelling suited to their age.
When to Visit
June and July bring the Great Migration directly through this stretch of the western Serengeti, as herds cross the Grumeti River. Outside this window, however, the picture stays strong. Substantial lion prides, hippo and a distinctive colobus monkey population sustain good game viewing throughout the rest of the year. Visitor numbers, in addition, stay considerably lower than in the more established parts of the park.
Practical Information
Scheduled flights run daily from Arusha to the Grumeti airstrip. From there, a five to ten-minute drive reaches the lodge. Children of all ages are welcome. The WILDchild programme, meanwhile, provides age-appropriate activities for younger guests throughout their stay.
Combining &Beyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge with Other Tanzania Destinations
The lodge’s western position pairs naturally with a stay further north or south in the Serengeti. This lets travellers combine the relative solitude of the western reaches with the migration’s other seasonal chapters in one trip. Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire, similarly, both extend into a wider northern Tanzania circuit. Zanzibar, meanwhile, offers a coastal close to the journey.
Our Tanzania Safari Guide covers wider planning. Nearby options, meanwhile, sit within Serengeti Safari Lodges. The full country collection, finally, appears at Luxury Tanzania Safari Lodges.
